Dog panting, hungry, tired after steroid for skin allergy. What to do?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | English Cocker Spaniel | Male | neutered | 5 years and 9 months old | 42 lbs

A month ago a vet has given my dog a shot of Cortisone to reduce his skin allergy. He started panting excessively. We went to another vet who gave him Omeprazol and it reduced. 2 days ago I went to the vet as skin allergy was back strong, vet gave prednisone cream. So it has been now 1 month from the injection. We put cream for 2 days and we had to stop as he is panting a lot, panting with sound and hungry all time, looks tired too. What should we do?

Hello. It sounds like you need to keep Goofy away from steroids as he seems to be very sensitive to the effects. You will need to talk with your veterinarian about other ways to help Goofy, either through allergy testing & a desensitization protocol, or trying alternative medications that are not steroids. These include Cytopoint & Apoquel. Good luck & thanks for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
