Is my dog's panting and blood clots normal 24 hours after birth?

Pet's info: Dog | American Pit Bull Terrier | Female | unspayed

With my dog having puppies 24 hours ago, she is expelling clots of blood.. I've noticed she is only done it a couple of times and it has been while pups are feeding.. it does not have a foul odor to it.. she has also been panting today but is now sleeping and has stopped.. I have a comforter in her whelping box to keep puppies warm but could it be it is making her hot.. I took her temperature and she does not have fever.. the panting and little clots of blood have just worried me a bit..

Both panting and clots of blood are normal, this can continue for another couple weeks. You are seeing the clots coming out when the puppies are feeding because it stimulates the uterus to contract, it's a normal mechanism to get rid of all the placenta and other uterine tissue that is related to the pregnancy.

Yes, this normal. Nursing causes the release of oxytocin, which in turn causes uterine contractions. Lyla is panting due to the uterine contractions. This can occur for up to two weeks. Keep in mind as well that this can be a sign of a post-partum problem, so make sure her temperature is normal (101-102.5F). If she has a fever, then she will need to see a vet immediately. Thank you for your question. I'm not sure how long ago Princess had her puppies. It is normal to pass some blood for a few days. If it goes beyond this time, or if she becomes lethargic, or stops eating/drinking, then seek veterinary care. What you are seeing in the mouth and her breath could be from cleaning the puppies, but be sure to check over the next few days to make sure it isn't getting any worse. Make sure she has access to plenty of water and food that is high enough in calories for nursing.

My dog just had puppies, still panting, no afterbirth. Is this normal?

If you have not had a veterinarian take x-rays to determine how many puppies are left you should take her to your veterinarian or an emergency hospital to make sure all puppies are out. She could still be in labor. Low calcium would be another possibility. This could also be a behavioral change. I would not be too concerned about no afterbirth or placentas - it is fairly rare for them to cause a problem when retained.

Panting and swollen nipples are quite normal for a dog with newborn puppies, as she has only 2 puppies i would not be too worried about the swollen nipples, they have plenty more to feed from. as long as she is otherwise normally behaving and eating she should be fine.
