My dog has panosteitis. Why isn't he improving after his treatment?

Panosteitis is not an infection and therefore anti-infection medicine (antibiotics) will not work. Panosteitis is treated with NSAIDs for dogs. (Please do not give him Ibuprofen or Paracetamol as this is poisonous to dogs). Panosteitis will go away by itself after a few months. If the x-ray of his legs was normal,. then he likely does not have panosteitis, as this would show very clearly on x-rays. Mailo may have a viral infection such as borreliosis or pains from growing too fast. Please do not try to diagnose Mailo yourself. I realize that the situation in Syria is difficult. But maybe you can find a veterinarian to look at Mailo and help.

Signs of panosteitis are: lameness that seems to shift legs, decreased appetite, and sometimes lethargy. Treatment involves supportive care which is the use of pain management (NSAIDS \- Opiates) and strict cage rest for 2-6 weeks or until the pet recovers. Joint supplements don't have side effects that we see in pets, except for some pets have a sensitive stomach to them. I am not sure what you mean when you say hat your pets ankle and hock join together. Radiographs of the leg can easily confirm a diagnosis of panosteitis. Dogs with Panosteitis are usually treated with a medication to address the underlying inflammation (either an NSAID such as Rimadyl or a steroid), and sometimes an additional pain medication such as gabapentin may be warranted. Of course, the decisions on the appropriate medications to be used should be made by your primary vet who knows the specifics of Harley's medical history. Poor Rosco! I'm sorry to hear that he's experiencing panosteitis and pain! Unfortunately a compression brace will not help this issue and could actually cause more pain for him. Rosco should be allowed to rest and you will need your veterinarian to prescribe pain medication for him if he is not already on pain meds. If he is on pain medications you pain want to contact your veterinarian to see if there are any other medications they can prescribe. It can take a long time (2-4 weeks, in most cases) for symptoms to resolve completely with rest and medication. So as long as things are gradually improving, I would be patient and continue to follow your veterinarian's instructions :)

From your description, I would suspect that this is due to pain from an injury or bone pain due to a condition known as panosteitis. Panosteitis occurs in larger dogs that have rapid growth. Genetic predisposition has been shown to be a factor as well. Rest and decreasing exercise along with anti inflammatory medications will help. This condition will typically resolve on its own if that is what this is. If this is an injury, I would still recommend the same. I hope this helps! Hi there and thanks for posting on Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! There has been no definitive evidence to suggest the distemper vaccine causes panosteitis. Panosteitis first became recognized around the same time the distemper virus vaccine became available on the market. Since the distemper virus can be isolated from bone, there was some suspicion of correlation between receiving the distemper virus vaccine and the development of panosteitis. Right now, there is simply not enough research to support a causation. I hope this helps!
