What's this painful red spot with scabs on my dog's lower back?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | unspayed | 2 years and 9 months old

My dog has this spot on her lower back that is red with no hair on it that she does not let any one touch it’s like if it hurts her when you do and it has one or two black scabs like if she was cut out a small hole she is a small white dog so it’s very noticeable I was wondering what it is and how can I help it get better

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This lesion could potentially be something like an abscess for example based on its appearance and your description. However, other things are possible. I recommend that you have Candy evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. If an abscess was noted, further local therapy with drainage and antibiotics would be recommended. Good luck and best wishes!
