Why is my dog still in pain and weak after vet and antibiotics?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This is possibly neck or back pain. It could still be pain associated with a leg even if nothing seems wrong with them. Since he has not improved after seeing your veterinarian, I recommend that you have Romeo reevaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Likely diagnostics include radiographs. Treatment would be based on findings. At the very least they can prescribe pain control medications to make Romeo feel better. In the meantime, reduce his activity as much as possible as that in itself can make a big difference. Good luck and have a good night!

It sounds like your girl is in pain, and given that she is getting up and moving around to a different after waking up yelping, I would be concerned that she is having pain in her spine and/or neck. This would also affect her walking and cause her to be lethargic. Because this has been happening for a couple of days now, I would have her seen by a vet first thing in the morning. The vet can do a lameness exam and x-rays to diagnose if there is a problem with her neck and/or spine, and can treat her for it. In the meantime, please do not give her any pain medications, many human ones are toxic for humans and can fatal if given.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Marley. I recommend that she sees her veterinarian. While she could be experiencing gastrointestinal pain, her breed is prone to neck and/or back pain. This can make a dog hesitant to do stairs or jump on furniture. Most of the the dog is pant and become clingy. Some will refuse to eat. Her veterinarian will examine her and determine the source of her discomfort. From there, treatment can be prescribed. I'm so sorry that Audrey is painful. Even if your veterinarian can't see anything on x-rays, it does not mean that she is not painful. Soft tissue pain can be very painful. I would recommend contacting your veterinarian to let them know that Audrey is still painful. They may want to examine her again to see if they can find anything new on examination to pin-point the source of her pain. Marley needs to go back to the vet for a follow-up if she is not doing better. They can help you better since they have all of her medical history. We really cannot be of much help as we don't have enough information. All I can tell you is that she needs more care and testing if you want to give her the best chance at recovery.

Hello, sorry to hear about Maicah. It sounds like she may be dealing less likely with an infectious disease and more likely with an inflammatory disease. On her bloodwork her white blood cells, which are the first responders to an infection are in the normal range, hence why I would be less suspicious of something infectious. Her red blood cells are decreased, which could occur from a chronic inflammation, loss of red blood cells, and potentially destruction of red blood cells. On the other hand, if she has erlichia this could cause joint pain and anemia. However, you tend to see other changes in the bloodwork which are not shown in the pictures you posted. Doxycycline for 3 weeks should treat an erlichia that could be present. A snap test or a PCR for erlichia could confirm this diagnosis. The weakness in her hind end could be associated with a primary orthopedic disease or neurologic disease. Some neurologic diseases in poodles can arise from degenerative inflammatory diseases. An orthopedic and neurologic examination could test for these. X-rays could also outline a primary orthopedic issue or be suggestive of a neurologic issue as well. In summary, Maicah should be thoroughly evaluated for a primary orthopedic or neurologic issue. I am a little less concerned about the erlichia at this moment due to the lack of changes in her blood, however she should have a snap test or PCR performed to confirm this. Her albumin is elevated which could be an error from the machine or she could be dehydrated. If this is an inflammatory disease, the prednisone she was prescribed may help. Hi and thank you for reaching out to Pet Coach about Gaby. I am so sorry to hear that she got hurt. Since Gaby's pain level has not significantly improved on the medications she has at home I am just as concerned as you are. You did not mention the exact medications that she is on but I am wondering if an additional medication may help her. If Gaby had any sort of neck/back pain during her trauma, it may help her to add a muscle relaxant to her treatment regimen (methocarbamol/robaxin). You should give your veterinarian a call right away to see if this would be an appropriate addition to her current treatments. You mention trouble walking and this is concerning for either primary neurological or orthopedic problem related to her fall. Even though xrays did not reveal a fracture, there are many problems that may still not have shown up (herniated disc, pinched spinal nerve). Sometimes the pain from these types of falls is bad enough that these older dogs need to be in the hospital on IV pain control to get them feeling better. I would highly recommend to consult with your veterinarian and assess if Gaby's pain is bad enough to warrant treatment in the hospital or just possibly try an additional medication at this time. In the meantime please restrict her exercise and movement to a bare minimum so that she does not further injure herself. Best of luck to your sweet Gaby.
