My dog is in pain and vet is closed. What can I give for pain at home?

Pet's info: Dog | Pomeranian | Female | 1 year and 3 months old | 22 lbs

Hello I have a pomperian that's in pain her hip is hurt and she is waking on her two front legs and right hide leg. We cannot move her unless she cries loudly. What can I give her for pain. Her vet is closed for the weekend. Aspirin isnt helping her.

First off, do not give Sadie aspirin. It can cause internal bleeding and kidney damage, and it is never recommended to give to a dog unless strictly prescribed by a vet. There are no safe OTC pain relievers for dogs. Many are toxic to dogs, and can be fatal if given. I would call around to find another vet who is open and who can see her, as she sounds extremely painful. Until you find a vet who is open, keep her quiet and rested, and do not move her unless it's necessary.

If Sadie has had aspirin, do not give any other medications. Ideally, you should not give any medications to your pet without the advice of a veterinarian.
Search online for the nearest veterinary ER and have Sadie seen there. She will likely need x-rays of the affected areas and pain management. Call your vet's office. Usually, a clinic will leave an emergency contact number for your vet or an ER on the answering machine/service.

Your vet should have given you some pain medication for Sadie. There is no over the counter pain medication suitable for dogs. You can help her with her food by either feeding canned food, or take her regular hard food and soak it in water so it gets wet and soft. If she still has pain tomorrow take her back to the vet for a recheck and pain medication.

Poor Willow! Unfortunately no, there are no safe effective over-the-counter pain medications for dogs. The best thing to do for her is minimize her activity and keep her quiet until she can get to the vet. If she needs help getting around, you can loop a towel under her tummy to use as a sling and take some of the weight off her legs. I would discourage even giving aspirin, as anything you give may interfere with the medications your vet may start tomorrow. Unfortunately there are no over the counter pain medications that I would recommend - while aspirin can be given to dogs it has a high risk for causing stomach ulcers with even a couple of doses and it will limit what your vet might be able to prescribe. While you could consider starting a gluocosamine supplement or fish oil it won't work right away. I think your best bet is to wait until you see your vet. If you feel Rufus is truly painful then you could see an emergency vet. tonight.

My dog is limping and withdrawn. What can I do for her pain?

There is nothing OTC that can safely be given to your dog. Many OTC medications are toxic or can easily be overdosed. Additionally, our experts are legally prohibited from recommending medications in the absence of a physical exam and a VPCR (veterinarian-patient-client relationship). Restrict her activity for the rest of the night and tomorrow. A warm compress can be applied for 10-15 minutes. If the lameness persists or if she is extremely painful, have her physically examined by your veterinarian. Afterwards, an appropriate medication can be administered or dispensed. Never medicate a pet without the advice of your veterinarian.

Poor Shadow! Unfortunately there are no safe OTC medications you can give her. Many human ones are toxic to dogs and can be fatal if given. She sounds very painful, and it would be best if she saw a vet tonight. You can take her into an ER vet clinic; if you don't have one in your area, there will be a vet on call for emergencies. The information to reach that vet is found on a clinic's answering machine or website. My dog is sore and out of vet pain meds. Can I give her OTC?

Unfortunately I do not recommend giving any over the counter pain medications to dogs. While aspirin is available in some pet stores and technically can be given to dogs it can easily cause stomach upset and if Koda was recently given any kind of NSAID medication it could cause serious problems. It’s also not the best for pain! I would recommend calling your vet to see if they can refill the pain medication for Koda since she’s still sore. Sometimes a warm compress can also help with comfort.

Unfortunately no. Many human pain medications are toxic to dogs, and can be fatal if given. I recommend resting her for the next 48 hours. No running, jumping, or playing. Take her out to toilet on a leash, and bring her right back in when she's done. If she still appears painful after this time, then I would take her into the vet for an exam. The vet can diagnose where the pain is coming from, and can dictate a treatment plan for it. She may also benefit from some pain medications, which the vet can prescribe.

No, that isn't correct. It isn't safe to give dogs aspirin, even baby aspirin. It cause GI ulcers ad bleeding. If Lily can hardly walk on it, she needs to see a vet because she is in a lot of pain. Rest her tonight, and take her into a vet first thing in the morning. If you fear she is extremely painful, take her into an ER vet now. Best of luck.
