My dog seems overweight. Should I switch to a lower calorie food?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I would recommend just changing to a lower calorie diet such as the one you mentioned. Other low fat or weight loss diets that I have had a very good experience with are Hills metabolic weight management diet and the Royal canin GI low fat diet. Good luck!

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Chloe is super cute! From your pictures she doesn't look overweight but I understand your concerns. I would recommend 315 calories total per day, which is about what you are giving her (~311). You can increase activity, cut back a bit on treats or change to a low calorie formula with in the brand you are currently feeding. I hope this helps!

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Love is adorable! She is also a very good body condition. I would NOT try to make her gain anymore weight. I would try to keep her the weight she is for the rest of her life. Obesity in pugs exacerbates their breathing problems and puts extra stress on bones and promotes arthritis. Obesity causes many health conditions and shortens the life of dogs. Being lean is a good thing. You just don't want to feel or see hip bones. I prefer Royal Canin. Have a great weekend!

I wouldn't recommend letting her gain anymore though. I think the treats are fine as long as Chloe doesn't have a chicken allergy. I hope this helps and have a great day!

Zoey is adorable!! I would recommend a weight loss food and a gradual transition to the new diet. I would also need to know exactly what Zoey is eating now to give you a good amount to give her. If you increase exercise, stop all treats and human food then many times dogs will lose weight just with that. I would also recommend weighing Zoey every 2 weeks to make sure she is continually losing weight. If you do put her on a diet and she does not lose weight you can always talk to your veterinarian about hypothyroidism which can make it difficult for dogs to lose weight. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! He is adorable! It has been proven that dogs live a longer life when they are lean. I would get him to lose weight to 12 lbs. Cut out the chicken, beef, bread and keep the treats to bare minimum. And try to increase exercise. If he doesn’t lose weight change to a prescription weight loss diet and consider checking his thyroid. Good luck!
