Is my dog overweight? How to check her weight and diet needs?

It can definitely be difficult to evaluate based on a photo though, especially in a furry dog like Joshie. Putting your hands onto her body can help you determine her body condition. You should feel a waist/area where he trunk slenders around her abdomen. You should be able to feel her ribs when you run your hands over her chest but they should have a small/thin layer of fat over them. When you run your hands under her, her belly should narrow/have a tuck. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I would just pick one protein source. I do not think Chloe is overweight, she has a waste. I wouldn't recommend letting her gain anymore though. I think the treats are fine as long as Chloe doesn't have a chicken allergy. I hope this helps and have a great day!

She looks like a perfect weight. She has a waist yet I cannot see her ribs. The roll is likely fine since everything else looks great! And it sounds like you are feeding her the appropriate amount 3/4-1 cup per day.

What a cutie! It's hard to tell from the picture, but she looks like she's at an ideal weight. Rather than tell you an exact number she should weigh, I think it's beneficial to explain what to look for to know that her body condition is ideal. At an ideal weight, you should be able to run your fingers over her sides and feel the indents between the ribs without pushing in. If you see her ribs, she is too thin. Looking down on her when she's standing, she should have a little indent in her waist. Monitor both of these things to make sure she maintains an ideal weight.

From looking at the picture, Chloe looks like an ideal weight right now. I can appreciate a good waist yet I can't see her ribs. You can certainly decrease her food a little to help prevent her from continuing to gain weight but watch closely to ensure she doesn't lose too much weight. I hope this helps!

Right now she looks OK but I would not want her to gain anymore weight. I recommend rechecking her weight in 2 to four weeks and if she's continuing to gain weight then you will need to decrease her food.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Being lean is not always a concern. A good body condition is based on muscle mass and palpation of the body, not a number on a scale. You should be able to feel her ribs while standing without pushing hard and she should have an hour glass waist from the sides and top of her body. She should also have good muscle definition in her chest and limbs. Make sure you are feeding what the bag of food says for her daily amount based on her weight.
