Why is my dog nursing herself if she's not pregnant? False pregnancy?

Otherwise, your veterinarian may recommend hormonal supplementation or spaying to prevent further episodes. To reduce mammary gland secretions, your veterinarian will advise you on using cold or warm packs to minimize the stimulation that promotes lactation. An Elizabethan collar (cone) can also help prevent the self-nursing or licking behavior that can stimulate lactation. In some patients, reducing the daily food intake can help to reduce the production of milk. The overall prognosis is good and most dogs improve within two to three weeks, even without treatment.

Mishti may be having what we call a "False Pregnancy". It occurs because their bodies release some of the same hormones that will occur with pregnancy, so she may actually think that she is/was pregnant. Yes if she didn’t get bred she could be having a false pregnancy. If you don’t plan to breed her I do recommend having her spayed. Dogs that have irregular heat cycles and false pregnancies can get uterine infections that can be very serious and need emergency treatment and spaying. Also the constant hormonal ups and downs make dogs moody and may be a factor in developing breast cancer sometimes later in life. A false pregnancy can last the nine weeks of a normal pregnancy then she should get over it a week or two after that. Hi, thanks for using PetCoach! I answered your previous question. If she was recently in heat but didn't have contact with male then she is experiencing a false pregnancy. It will take 2 or more months for the symptoms to resolve. Once they do I recommend spaying her because this tends to happen again. The licking of the vulva can be related or she could have a vaginitis, urinary tract infection or she could be leaking urine (urinary incontinence). If she has bloody or brown discharge from her vulva she could have an infected uterus (pyometra) which is a surgical emergency. Hi, thanks for using PetCoach! Poor Maya! Sometimes when a dog is spayed close to the start or the end of a heat cycle they can experience pregnancy signs (false pregnancy). This occurs due to a hormonal imbalance or sudden withdrawal of hormones. The body then thinks that it is pregnant when it is not. The dog will carry stuffed animals around like puppies, nest, act clingy or anxious, they can even have mammary gland development and produce milk! It is temporary but can last 2 months but can be shorter.
