My dog won't eat his food after being neutered. What should I do?

It is not unusual for dogs to not have interest in food and water that first night after anesthesia and surgery. However, if you have concerns that something isn’t right then it is always safest to have her examined by a veterinarian. Your veterinarian may have an emergency number or they may refer to a local emergency center. Best of luck and I hope she improves soon.

Keep him on boiled rice and chicken for 2-3 days, it might still be related to the anesthesia he went through, if it doesn't resolve in 3 days, take him back to the vet to get it checked and treated.

Poor pup! If he's vomiting, not eating, and isn't able to keep anything down, this is very concerning - so I would recommend taking him back in to your veterinarian today to be seen. It's possible that this could be some type of complication related to his neuter surgery, or could be a totally separate problem. Your veterinarian can examine him and may recommend blood work, x-rays, or other testing if needed to help diagnose the problem and see what kind of treatment is needed.

Good morning! It is concerning that Bongo is able to reach his stitches to lick them. I recommend purchasing an Elizabethan collar (soft or hard cone shaped collar) or inflatable donut shaped collar immediately to prevent him from being able to lick his incision site. It is recommended to bring him back to your veterinarian to have his incision checked to make sure he has not removed any of his sutures and that his incision has not become inflamed/infected from him licking. Another potential complication includes Bongo developing a scrotal hematoma if he is too active during recovery. It sounds as though your veterinarian can revisit the need for pain medication/additional pain medication +/- a mild sedative during recovery +/- antibiotics during recovery pending the appearance of his incision. The only acceptable table food for dogs (that won't inadvertently cause pancreatitis) is plain unseasoned boiled rice and chicken which can be given during recovery from surgery (or firings recovery from episodes of vomiting/diarrhea). I would recommend placing an e-collar on Bongo, offering plain boiled rice and chicken and calling your veterinarian to schedule a consult to be sure that the incision looks clean/dry and does not need repair. Definitely be cautious and exert necessary precautions to avoid anyone getting bit! Best of luck!

Hello, thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. You do not need to feed Coach anything special for his surgery, it is always best not to change things up too much. He should receive proper pain medications that should keep him very comfortable, & this will do more to prevent nausea & loss of appetite than anything else. He should do just fine. Take care.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! He is adorable! It is not necessarily uncommon for a dog to not want to eat for 1-2 days when adjusting to a new environment. However, that should improve quickly. If he is otherwise fine with a normal activity level, you can continue to monitor for the next 24 hours. If no improvement, have him evaluated by your veterinarian. It could be that he is painful following his surgery. Theoretically, yes, there are things that can be transmitted to your other dogs. He may still be a little nauseous from the anesthesia or medications that he received. Call your vet and give him/her an update. Your vet may want to prescribe an anti-nausea medication to see if that helps. Continue to offer him fresh water and you could also try some boiled chicken and white rice to see if he will eat that.
