My dog's nipples are dark after whelping. Should I be concerned?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | American Eskimo Dog | Female | unspayed | 10 months and 18 days old | 15 lbs

My dog is 1 week post whelp. 2 of her tests are dark almost black in color. She feeding puppies fine, no pain or nipping at them. What can it be.

Hello. If this is just pigmentation, & the skin is soft & supple, and the puppies are being well cared for, then there is nothing to be concerned about. The skin darkening is probably just a hormonal response. Thanks for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
