Are new pigmented spots all over my 5-month-old Maltese puppy normal?

The dark areas that are shown in your photo are normal areas of skin pigment. Even white dogs can have pigment on their skin. The skin in the photo looks very healthy and not indicative of a chronic dermatitis condition.

Thanks for your question. Unfortunately the picture that was attached is quite blurry and makes it difficult to see anything when it is enlarged. In the smaller image, all I can see appears to be normal pigmentation spots. If there are smaller spots that aren't visible in this photo you may want to try to post a new picture.

This is likely completely normal. Dogs can have patches of brown skin on their pink skin, and the skin won't turn pink again. You can't do anything for it to turn pink, and it's really nothing about which to worry. I hope this helps.

The pictures are pretty blurry so it is difficult to see the spots well. However, young puppies can develop little freckles or increased pigment as they get older. I suspect this is what is going on. If they are crusty, itchy, or have hairloss then they should be looked at soon. Otherwise I think it is probably fine to wait until your appointment. Best of luck and thank you for using Pet Coach.

Based on their appearance, they look like freckles or birthmarks, which are normal and should not be causing him to be itchy. Oscar may be itchy for other reasons, such as allergies or a skin infection. If you are concerned that he may have an underlying skin disease, your veterinarian can perform a skin scrape and cytology to look for evidence of organisms that may be infecting the skin. If this area is flat and not growing, it is likely not a cause for concern. If the areas become raised or rapidly changes, then he will need to see a veterinarian.
