My dog's neuter site has a tiny bloody hole. Is it an emergency?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Shih Tzu | Male | neutered | 9 months and 1 day old | 11.5 lbs

My dog just got neutered this morning and when we came home I noticed a tiny hole with a bit of blood on it . Not sure if it's an opening and whether I need to take him to an emergency after hour vet. I don't know what to do, please help.

This is likely very normal and don't panic! try to keep him from licking at the incision. Some skin incisions are left to heal completely open and do just fine. A tiny amount of blood is not a concern. If he starts to have a very large amount of swelling in the scrotal sac where the testicles are, this is more of a concern.

It could simply be a small space between the sutures, which can happen. Given that it's a tiny hole with a bit of blood in it, I would monitor it for now and gently wipe away the blood. If the hole gets bigger, Rocky starts bleeding excessively from the hole, he becomes lethargic or anorexic, or the hole appears infected (redness, swelling, pus, warmth to the touch), then I would take him into the vet.
