My dog has nerve damage from car accident. What's her prognosis?

Poor Georgia! Unfortunately it is possible that she may have permanent damage due to her accident, especially since her injury occurred while she was a puppy and still growing. However, there may be a few things that may help her, including acupuncture, massage, chiropractic treatment, rehabilitation exercises and physiotherapy, as you mentioned. It's also important that you keep her at a lean body weight and don't let her get overweight, as that would put extra strain on her joints. Talk to your vet about joint supplements to help support her joints, as the rest of her joints and legs will be taking on extra strain due to the fact that she cannot use her left front leg, which can make them more prone to injury and arthritis. Your veterinarian may also want to prescribe pain medication, as the fact that she cannot use her leg properly is likely causing pain in the affected limb and other limbs, as described above. Some types of pain medications are particularly good for nerve pain, and may be a good option for Georgia. I am sorry to hear that your pet suffered such a traumatic event. Brain trauma is quite serious and the prognosis (chance of survival) of your pet can only be evaluated and determined by the vet who physically examined him unfortunately. We cannot make that determination, but we can tell you that brain trauma is crucial in the first 24-48 hrs and if his mental and neurological functions are still intact (once he is un-sedated) and if they can control any intracranial hemorrhage before it has permanent nerve damage, then prognosis is promising for a potential recovery. Keep Monster hospitalized and continue to inquire about your pets current condition so that you are informed on his progress every step of the way.

It’s a little difficult to see the fracture in your picture of the x-ray, but it doesn’t look like the spinal canal is severely affected so if Luna doesn’t have neurologic deficits then cage rest alone may be fine. I would definitely recommend at least consulting with a surgeon however - they would be able to give a better idea about the chances of recovery with surgery vs rest.

Neurologic issues can take time. It is great that she is up and bearing weight on her own, dogs are so amazing. Hopefully she had xrays to look for a spinal/pelvic fracture, collapsed disc space, etc. as these would be important to rule out as well. You will need to give her potentially even months to know what her new normal with be. Hopefully she will at some point be deficit free or only have a mild deficit but it is too soon to tell. Keep working with her. Hopefully your vet has recommended a physical therapy/rehab plan for her. If not, you could request referral to a rehab therapist. Wow, I'm so sorry he has hit by a car! How horrible for him and you. Dogs can recover from nerve damage, but it can take months for full function to be restored. I'd give it a couple of months to see if things improve.

This is definitely something that can be fixed by a veterinarian, so I wouldn't have her put down based on this gash alone. There may be other problems though, so it's best to have a vet evaluate her soon. The vet can give you an idea of how bad her injuries are and what it would take to get her back to normal. It's best not to wait longer than 24hours to have her seen by a vet, because this gash is easier to fix the sooner it's seen after the injury. Oh poor baby. From the very little I know about her situation, I think she probably needs to be hospitalized full time and receive IV medications to try to stop the seizures or possible be put under anesthesia to allow her brain to heal a bit. It sounds like her prognosis is guarded at this point and she may not make it. There isn't anything you can do at home.
