My dog has a neck wound with parasites. Should I use peroxide or vet?

Unfortunately hydrogen peroxide doesn't help pets with any type of skin condition. In fact we don't use it for any wounds because it can potentially cause cell necrosis (dying off of normal tissue). This appears to be a deep infection, which is likely why it hasn't healed well for you. You can try cleaning it with Betadine diluted 50:50 with warm water and the hair needs to be shaved around this to allow the skin to breathe and heal well. I would not place Neosporin on a wound like this, because it likely won't help. You may be able to find a hot spot spray at your local pet store that can be used. However, there is a good chance this won't heal without the help of your vet, who has stronger oral antibiotics and topical medical sprays to take care of this properly. I would schedule an appt if the Betadine and clip are not able to improve this area well within the next few days. Best wishes getting Murphy's skin to heal. Take care.

I would not recommend hydrogen peroxide, you can use an antibiotic ointment and you will need an e-collar as well. bear in mind there might be a foreign body (usually a grass seed) buried in there which will need to be removed under sedation by your vet.

Poor pup! If the wound isn't healing, it's likely that it is infected and will need prescription antibiotics to treat it effective. Because of this, I would recommend taking your dog to the vet tomorrow morning for an exam - he/she can take a look at the wound and determine what is needed to treat it. In the meantime, if you're able to gently clip the hair and matted discharge from over the wound, this should be fine to do. You can also gently clean the area with some warm water and antibacterial soap. I would not recommend using peroxide, as this may sting and often causes additional tissue damage and irritation which can make healing more difficult.

If this is superficial, you could try to use chlorhexidine pads topically. However, if this is a deep wound, that would not be recommended. I do not recommend spraying hydrogen peroxide. Does fenyl =phenol? If so, it is extremely poisonous and corrosive to skin and body tissues so don't use it!! You can flush maggots out of wounds with hydrogen peroxide solution 3%. But you then must flush the wound very well with sterile saline or sterile water. I don't know if your puppies will survive if the maggots have gone deep inside. I'm sorry.

Poor Amos Tobias! I would not recommend using hydrogen peroxide on wounds, it can damage tissue and delay healing. If there is "goo" in it, I would have to wonder if that goo is pus, which means the wound is infected. He will need to see a vet for the wound. The vet can clean it sterilely, and can prescribe antibiotics for the infection. I would take him into the vet today during normal business hours.

The pictures are not very clear but I would be afraid with a deep wound that maggots may be present which can be life threatening. If at all possible a vet visit would be recommended. If absolutely unavailable, bathing the area with 3% hydrogen peroxide can help flush maggots out. I would bathe all of him with a mild shampoo and cool water to remove as much sanitiser as possible. I would alsorecommendan oral flea preventionsuchas simparica or bravecto. If he develops a fever, antibiotics will be required.
