Dog neck rash from collar: What can I use to treat the irritation?

That looks like a pretty nasty hot spot. Hot spots are caused by chronic moisture against the skin (which is common with a collar or something else wrapped around the neck). The best way to treat a hot spot is to clip the hair from the area so that it can fully dry out. You will need to use buzzing clipper, not a razor or scissors. You can try an OTC pet antimicrobial spray, but often prescription sprays or ointments work a little better since they contain a steroid and real antibiotics. You may also have to get creative in finding ways to prevent Peyton from scratching this area, as that will delay healing and can damage the skin. You can try socks, dog booties, or bandaging the feet to cover the nails. Unfortunately, due to the location, he won't be able to use an e-collar. If the hotspot isn't looking better in 48 hours, I would recommend that you have Peyton checked out by a vet.

I am sorry to hear about Bella! It looks like perhaps she could have developed a rash due to the contact with her collars. Some dogs seems more sensitive to having collars, or if the collars haven't been washed in awhile or got wet and were wet against the skin it can cause irritation. You can try washing the area with a colloidal oatmeal shampoo from your vet or the pet store, and letting her go without a collar when indoors. You can put a harness on or get a new clean collar or a rolled leather collar which may cause less irritation to the skin. If the problem persists, a visit to the vet is recommended.

If you think the lesion was caused by the collar rubbing, you can put some neosporin on it. The most important thing is to keep her from scratching. You may have to put a t-shirt or similar around her neck , so she cannot directly scratch the lesion. If the itching does not stop within 2 days or if the lesion starts to expand or ooze, you will need to stop the neosporin and take her to a veterinarian for an exam, as it may have been infected by bacteria. This could also be a fungus, in which case the neosporin will not work, If possible, wash her collar before putting it back on

I recommend keeping the collar off for now and not letting her swim or get wet for at least the next few days. I would not put any more neosporin or other ointments on the area, as this can trap moisture and delay healing. This presentation could be due to a trauma or localized spot of skin infection (likely to be caused by bacteria -hot spot-). A check up, appropriate disinfection and eventually antibiotics (oral, topical or in a shampoo formulation) are needed to solve the problem. Disinfection can eventually be started at home with very diluted hibiscrub or betadine or salted water baths. Buster collar may be useful as well to avoid scratching. Hello, my name is Dr. Elizabeth and I am happy to help. Pets' can get rashes for many reasons. Some times you can care for it at home and sometimes they need to go to the veterinarian. For Boba you can try home care first. The first thing to try to figure out is how to protect the area from further scratching. It's a tricky because this portion of his neck won't be covered with the normal elizabethan collar. You would try a loosely fitting dough-nut style collar. Or the end of a tube sock cut to loosely fit around the area. A doggie turtle neck would work but it might be too hot where you live for that. Try to figure something out that covers it but not a choking/strangulation hazard. Next, wash the area once a day with either plain hand soap (like Dial) or a medicated pet shampoo. This will help to control the number of topical pathogens as well as remove oil and dead skin cells. Rinse the area well and gently towel dry. Lastly, apply a topical antibiotic twice a day. Just a dab will do and rub it in well. Make sure the skin is dry before application. Neosporin is fine to use. Keep him indoors, clean and dry. You can get hydrocortizone cream for pets and apply that once a day, try to apply with at least 2 hours after and before the neosporin. You can also give him benedrl every 8-12 hours. If the spot is not much better in 1 week, if it gets worse at any point or if the lesion is not completely healed within 2 weeks, Boba needs to be examined by the veterinarian.
