My dog has a painful neck fluid pocket. What if I'm afraid of the vet?

This is a small bump on Rascal's neck, and it could be from an insect bite, a benign tumor, a small cyst, or potentially a malignant tumor. Any suspicious bumps should be examined by the vet. The vet can perform a test called a fine needle aspirate on it. To do this, the vet sticks a small needle into the bump to get a sample of it's cells, and examines the cells on a slide under a microscope. It's usually painless to the animal, and relatively quick to perform. If you have not had a veterinarian take a look at this, I would recommend doing so and having some testing done to help identify what this could potentially be. The veterinarian can start by inserting a small needle into the mass and try and get a good sample of cells to look at under the microscope. The most definitive way of telling what this mass could be is to send out a tissue sample of the mass. If it is causing discomfort, I would have it removed and send it out to find out what it could be. If it is an abscess, it likely needs to be drained and then Diamond will likely need to be on a course of antibiotic therapy. Again, I would have a veterinarian take a look at this so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. I hope this helps guide you in the right direction!

This fluid filled swelling above Ori's shoulder could be due to a cyst or an abscess. She should see a vet for this so it can be diagnosed in order to be treated properly. Both a cyst and an abscess will required sterile draining, and an abscess will require antibiotics to treat the infection. I would bring Ori into the vet first thing Monday.

The concern being that this amount of swelling in this area could press on the airways and important vessels. The only way to know for sure what’s going on would be to have your vet sedate him, and try to lance the area. If it’s an abscess, it will have to be opened to drain anyways and then you would continue antibiotics. If it is all firm tissue, it could be a sting, a cancer, or an area of inflammation due to something like a fox tail. Best wishes to you and Flash!

There is no way of knowing what it is just based on its appearance. This is often differentiated by a test called a fine needle aspirate (FNA) which is a pain free, inexpensive and easy procedure which in most cases will help reach a diagnosis. Sometimes a biopsy is needed for a definitive diagnosis. I recommend that you have her evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. I am really hoping for something benign. I recommend that you have her evaluated by a veterinarian as soon as possible for further assessment and treatment. If confirmed to be an abscess this is usually treated by drainage and flushing of the abscess as well as antibiotics. This usually resolves uneventfully. Good luck and have a good night!
