My dog has the MDR1 gene mutation. Can I safely give them glucosamine?

Herding breeds or breeds her herding descent are the most effected. All other breeds, have a less than 5% chance of carrying the mutation. I hope this has helped! Best wishes to you.

No, there should not be any correlation. As a matter of fact Glucosamine has benn shown to be beneficial for the lining of the bladder also. You can keep giving the chondroitin and glucosamine to MoJo. But do have the UTI diagnosed and treated by a veterinarian. Male dogs rarely get UTIs, so there may be something more serious going on such as a kidney infection or prostate infection.

Yes, as far as we know these supplements are the same. You can use human branded forms of glucosamine, chondroitin, MSM and fish oils for dogs. These supplements are all very safe. Technically, all heartworm preventatives (even those with ivermectin) are safe in dogs with an MDR1 gene mutation since the effective dose of medication in heartworm is significantly lower than that which would cause neurotoxicity. However, most vets will preferentially choose selamectin (Revolution) or milbemycin (Interceptor) based products for MDR1 mutant dogs over ivermectin (Heartgard) based products. If Tasha has historically been very sensitive to heartworm preventatives, I would advise giving her flea/tick prevention and heartworm prevention 2 weeks apart rather than simultaneously. Your vet will be able to perform a blood test for heartworm disease prior to starting Tasha on a heartworm preventative, as all are prescription based.

Fortunately, there is usually nothing overtly toxic with overdosing on a joint supplement, & if Louis is doing well at this time, he should continue to do so. He may experience some gastric upset, so diarrhea is still a possibility. I do want you to always be on the lookout for additional stomach problems such as vomiting, gagging/retching, bloating or perceived abdominal pain. Yes, the glucosamine supplements are safe to give with EPI. It should get absorbed just fine. Dasuquin is a great product to use for arthritis and another product (that is injectable) called Adequan is another product to consider for the management of arthritis and promote healthy joints.
