My dog mated. How long until birth? Can I spay or prevent pregnancy now?

Thank you for more information on your dog and the situation. A dog's pregnancy lasts between 58-68 days. Spaying her is still possible, but it's up to the vet to decide if they want to do it or not. As I said, there are vets who do not like to spay pregnant dogs that are far along in their pregnancy. I would give local vet clinics a call to see they would be willing to spay her. This can be a difficult situation! Since Snowbell mated (I assume while she was in heat), there is certainly a chance that she may have become pregnant. At this point, your options are to either have her spayed very soon to terminate any possible pregnancy and prevent the occurrence of future pregnancies, or wait and allow her to deliver any pups. There is no sure way to know if a pet is pregnant through physical examination alone, especially in the 1st trimester. Most of the time you can palpate moving puppies in an enlarged belly during the 2nd trimester, but sometimes this can prove challenging in overweight or large breed dogs. Some common tell-tale signs that suggest you may have a pregnant dog are: swollen abdomen, weight gain, and enlarged mammary glands. Then you can confirm your pet is pregnant through x-ray or ultrasound (to detect fetal heartbeats). The gestation period (time that a pet is pregnant) in dogs is 58-72 days, an on average around 63 days. It is a good idea to get Martina spayed if she isn't pregnant, to not only prevent future pregnancies, but to also prevent other disease processes like Pyometra (acute infected uterus) and mammary cancer from forming later on in her life.

If Bonnie recently mated with the male dog, it may be too soon to determine if she is pregnant. If you don’t plan to breed her in the future then I would recommend spaying her as soon as possible. There are medications that can be given to abort the feti, but this can be very hard on the mama dog, and it is not 100% reliable. This is usually given under hospitalization observation. The normal gestation length for a dog is about 63 days so I would expect her to have puppies by now if she were pregnant. I think you can safely breed her at her next heat cycle which will probably occur in the next two months. If she had a litter of pups a couple months ago I would recommend skipping one heat cycle before breeding again so the bitch can fully recover. Be sure to have her examined by a veterinarian before breeding to make sure she is in good health.

Puppy heart beats can be detected on ultrasound at 28 days gestation and we can see their skeletons on X-rays around 50 days. She could be pregnant or she could be suffering from a false pregnancy which occurs after they have a heat cycle from a hormonal imbalance. This imbalance causes the body to think it is pregnant when it actually isn't. The dog can develop mammary glands, produce milk, nest, carry stuffed animals around like babies, act anxious. It resolves with in 2-3 months. I would make an appointment with your Vet to see if you can confirm or deny pregnancy. I wish you the best!
