My dog mated after neuter surgery. Should I worry about his incision?

A recently neutered male dog may potentially impregnate a receptive female for as long as one month after surgery. Sperm is produced in the testicles then mixes with seminal fluid in the prostate. It is possible for those sperm to survive for as long as a month after the testes, which replenish the supply, are removed. Additionally, testosterone levels are still high in the male and he will want mate with a receptive female until those levels decline.

As long as he isn't around any intact females it should be fine! Testicular torsion and injuries can happen to intact dogs, however the incidence is very low so it isn't something I would really worry about. As long as Pepper is acting healthy, and happy, he should be just fine.

The patient becomes weak, pale and very lethargic. If he has any of these signs, then you need to seek emergency care right away. If he is eating, drinking and acting like himself, then it is more likely that he has some post-surgical swelling and bruising of the scrotum. The incision site itself appears to be healing well. I recommend following up with his veterinarian to ensure he does not require additional treatment. For example, some dogs that are too active will require mild sedatives to keep them quiet and allow their body to heal. I hope this information helps!

A neutered dog can still have sex – if he wants. If it has been long enough after the neuter, (typically they are completely sterile six to eight weeks after being neutered )he cannot impregnate the female.

I would check to see if he pulled any of them out, or if the incision looks red, swollen, or if there is pus coming from it. Should you see any of this, Colt will need to see a vet right away. Hello. Barring any complications, recovery is pretty quick, usually a day or so. But we do recommend taking things easy for 10-14 days to give all the tissues a chance to heal. There is also a small chance that a male dog may have some residual sperm in his reproductive tract that could potentially get a female dog pregnant.
