My dog has itchy, bleeding skin. Is there a home remedy for mange?

From the pictures, it appears Rosie has a severe skin infection that may be caused by a mite infection (mange) or flea allergy. She will need to be treated as soon as possible for this at your local veterinarian's office. Unfortunately, there is no home remedies for mange. Her skin infection (even if it is fleas) will need to be treated with antibiotics at your veterinarian's office. Using a monthly flea preventative will help prevent fleas from reoccurring. Please take her in as soon as possible. She really looks miserable in the pictures .

This presentation could be due to deep localized spot of skin infection (likely to be caused by bacteria technically called deep pyoderma). A check up, appropriate disinfection and possibly antibiotics (oral, topical or in a shampoo formulation) are needed to solve the problem. Disinfection may be started at home with very diluted hibiscrub or betadine or salted water baths twice daily. Buster collar may be useful as well to avoid any scratching. First, you need to make sure this is mange. There are 2 types of mange....Demodectic mange is typically found in young puppies or adult dogs with seriously compromised immune systems. Sarcoptic mange can be found in dogs of any age, but is more common in dogs that live outdoors. It is extremely itchy and typically has patterns of hair loss and rash on the edges of the ears, along extremities. The photos you included are not a clear suggestion of either type of mange. There are no successful over the counter remedies for mange. It would be best to see your vet for a proper diagnosis. Your pet may be suffering from allergies, a skin infection, or other issues. Once you know if your dog has mange and which type....they are treated with different medications... or if your dog has something else.. .your veterinarian can get you started off on the right treatment plan.

I can give you a home remedy for dandruff, but unfortunately there are no home remedies for mange. Treating mange requires medications from the vet, and I would take Bounty into the vet to discuss the use of medications. As for the dandruff, you can give him an oatmeal bath and supplement him with fish oil. He can get 1,000 mg fish oil containing 300 mg of EPA/DHA combined for every 30 pounds of body weight.

Poor Chip! He sounds very uncomfortable :(. Unfortunately, I'm afraid there is really no way around taking him to the vet to get this problem treated - it's certainly possible that he could have mange, but he could also have allergies, fleas, or a bacterial or fungal skin infection. Some simple skin tests will be needed to diagnose the problem first, in order to know how to treat it. Skin issues this severe virtually always require prescription medication to treat effectively, so there are no home remedies that are likely to work. I am sorry to hear about poor Dixie. Her skin looks quite irritated and itchy from the photo. Mange would definitely be a top suspect on my list of possible causes for her condition. We would also worry about severe allergies with secondary bacterial infection or yeast infection of the skin, allergic reaction to a drug or chemical, immune mediated disease, or in older dogs we may worry about types of cancer affecting the skin. I would recommend a visit to the vet as soon as possible. The vet will likely want to do a skin scrape to check for mites. They may recommend a cytology to look for bacteria and yeast. Treatment will depend on the underlying cause of the condition and may include oral antibiotic or antifungals, antihistamines or steroids, or medications to treat mites (these may include injectable or oral ivermectin or some newer prescription flea preventative products that are being used to treat mange).

Simply dry skin shouldn’t be that itchy. I would recommend that you have Ricky examined by the vet to check for mange, fleas, allergies, or skin infection which could be causing the itch. Depending on the cause of the itch, there are lots of treatment options, ranging from medicated shampoos or mousses to oral antibiotics-inflammatories or antibiotics. Make sure you change the bandage daily. I don’t like air impermeable dressings like cling wrap, because most wounds need oxygen to prevent moisture from getting trapped underneath and causing additional skin issues.
