My puppy has skin issues on tail and feet. Can I treat mange at home?

Poor guy. There are really only 2 types of mites that we see in veterinary medicine- Scabies and Demodexx mites. Scabies (a type ofmite) is infectious to people so if you yourself are not itching then you can kind of rule that one out. The other mite, Demodexx isn't infectious to people or other pets, and nowadays it can be treated with oral flea preventatives such as Bravecto, Nexgard or Simparica + a medicated topical shampoo through your vet. I would recommend just starting Baileys' on one of these to cover any kind of mite issue. Then I would suggest getting Bailey on an oral antibiotic to clear up the skin infection that is present. The ears look to be infected as well. This will require a topical ear medication and cleaner from your vet to resolve. Skin allergy testing is not commoonly used anymore due to the poor overall response to allergy immunotherapy shots. THe most common allergy medication used nowadays is Apoquel. I would ask your vet about this as well, especially if mites are not the underlying problem, which can be easily confirmed or denied with a simple skin scraping test done through your vet. It is then treated with prescription medication and the vet will need to ensure the infestation is all clear before discontinuing treatment. It's also best to have a vet evaluate him, because it's possible that Cinnamon could have another condition besides mange.

First, you need to make sure this is mange. There are 2 types of mange....Demodectic mange is typically found in young puppies or adult dogs with seriously compromised immune systems. Sarcoptic mange can be found in dogs of any age, but is more common in dogs that live outdoors. It is extremely itchy and typically has patterns of hair loss and rash on the edges of the ears, along extremities. The photos you included are not a clear suggestion of either type of mange. There are no successful over the counter remedies for mange. It would be best to see your vet for a proper diagnosis. Your pet may be suffering from allergies, a skin infection, or other issues. Once you know if your dog has mange and which type....they are treated with different medications... or if your dog has something else.. .your veterinarian can get you started off on the right treatment plan.

Hello. I cannot say for sure what this is without a hands on exam and some simple tests, but your veterinarian would be able to solve this for you pretty easily. Mange in a puppy this young is not common, but a simple and quick skin scrape would determine if it is mange. More likely, it is a skin infection- this may be bacterial or fungal. Unfortunately, I'm afraid there is really no way around taking him to the vet to get this problem treated - it's certainly possible that he could have mange, but he could also have allergies, fleas, or a bacterial or fungal skin infection.
