How can I get my dog to truly like and make friends with other dogs?

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua | Female | unspayed | 7 years and 5 months old | 8 lbs

How to I get my current dog (a min pin chihuahua mix) to be more social and like other dogs? She puts up with them but I’ve been wanting another dog so I want her to make a FRIEND, not just acquaintance.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! She is so adorable! The best thing for this is to have her associate other dogs with something positive. I like to use treats for this. When she is around other dogs and behaves well, you give her a treat. This will get her used to something positive when being nice with other dogs. Also, it is crucial to socialize her a lot which can be accomplished by taking her to the dog park. Keep in mind that some dogs do not enjoy the company of other dogs as much and prefer human interaction regardless of how much we want them to have lots of friends. However, these are things to try to accomplish this. Good luck and have a great day!

My dog is scared of other dogs. How can I help her overcome her fear?

This actually is not particularly unusual - while many dogs enjoy playing with other dogs, some dogs definitely prefer people. The dog park can be overwhelming even for social dogs so I would recommend avoiding it for now - if she continues to feel overwhelmed she could start to become fear aggressive. You may want to start by meeting one on one with a quiet dog friend to get her used to dogs. Make sure it is a good experience by offering treats, and if she starts to become too anxious stop and try again another day. She may never get to the point where she loves other dogs that are not familiar, but hopefully you can find a few dogs that she knows and will play with.

I would highly recommend you consider contacting a local dog trainer who can work with you in person as that is needed. My 17-week chihuahua is scared of dogs. Is his socialization over?

Hi there! Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! He is right at the perfect socialization stage right now and for the next few months to come. He can get used to bigger dogs if introduced to him slowly and if you remain persistent. It has to be in a controlled environment meaning that you bring the larger dog to him slowly. At least try to start with a dog who is not very active and that is for sure nice. He can definitely get used to large dogs. The main thing is associating that experience with something positive by for example giving him treats and praise. Consistency and persistence are key. Good luck with your pup!

Puppies love treats so you just need to make sure you associate these commands with positive things such as treats to distract him. It is just that they cause just enough excitement or anxiety (or both) for him to forget his training and to get to more of a “fight or flight” stage. A little anti-anxiety medication or slower introduction to your sisters dogs when you visit may help. A vibrating collar to get his attention and then a command (come, sit, etc) with a treat can help refocus his attention and calm his emotions.
