My dog has lymphoma, swollen nodes, acts normal. What stage?

My dog was just diagnosed with lymphoma All of her lymph nodes are swollen She is acting like there is nothing wrong with her. What stage of lymphoma would she be considered to have

I'm so sorry you and Fendi are going through this. Please consider a referral to a veterinary oncologist for a consultation to see what options are available for Fendi's treatment. There are chemotherapy protocols for canine lymphoma treatment/management that may be good options for Fendi, but they need to be started asap. Fendi may be acting normal now, but if left untreated, lymphoma in dogs can be fatal in a matter of weeks. The good news is that in dogs where lymphoma is treated with chemotherapy protocols and goes into remission, the dogs usually feel good, and often seem to be back to “normal” while in remission. The oncologist and your regular veterinarian can work with you to find the best plan for you and Fendi based on Fendi’s overall health and response to treatment. I'm very sorry for Fendi's diagnosis! Lymphoma is staged from 1 to 5, with 1 being the least severe and 5 being the worst. If Fendi has multiple enlarged lymph nodes in various parts of her body, this would make her at least a Stage 3. She might be a Stage 4 or 5, depending on whether or not any of her internal organs or bone marrow is involved - additional testing would be needed to determine this, including abdominal x-rays and ultrasound, bone marrow aspiration, etc.

Dogs with lymphoma are also assigned a "substage" of a or b depending on whether they have any symptoms of illness or not. Since Fendi is acting completely normal, this would likely make her a substage a. So all told, it sounds like she would be Stage 3a, 4a, or 5a depending on the factors discussed above.

There are other things that influence the prognosis and possible treatment options for dogs with lymphoma, such as whether her cancer is B-cell or T-cell lymphoma - there are specialized lab tests that can be ordered to check for this. Many dogs with lymphoma do respond well to chemotherapy, so if you're interested in pursuing treatment for Fendi, I would definitely suggest asking your veterinarian for referral to a veterinary oncologist - he/she can evaluate Fendi in person as well as all of her lab results, and will discuss her situation and treatment options with you in more detail.

What size do a dog's lymph nodes get when diagnosed with lymphoma?

Not necessarily as other disease processes can cause lymph node swelling. Every case is different and some dogs have mild lymphadenoapthy at diagnosis and others have significant lymphadenopathy. In general however reactive lymphadenopathy is usually more mild. If lymphadenopathy is suspected it is important to rule out other causes such as systemic diseases (tick borne, fungal, etc.) especially in a young dog in certain parts of the country (or with a travel history), allergic skin disease, etc. Ultimately needle sampling of the lymph nodes is an initial step but will not always diagnose all cases. Should I continue chemo for my senior dog with lymphoma? Prognosis?

In my experience lymphoma is a cancer that responds well to chemotherapy. Generally the lymph nodes shrink quickly and the dogs quality of life improves while in remission. Due to your dog's age and stage of cancer you may not get a long period of remission but Fei Fei should feel well during that time. So if you are seeing improvement in his clinical signs I would continue the recommended chemotherapy protocol. Remember to enjoy everyday with Fei Fei. My senior dog has swollen neck glands, biopsy inconclusive. What next?

I would recommend removal or at least a biopsy of the lymphnodes (where a little piece of the lymph node is removed). This can be done under geeneral anesthesia, which nowadays is very safe or, if your dog is very quiet, may be done under sedation and a local anesthesia (I would prefer the general anesthesia though). This could indeed be lymphoma or it could be reactive lymph nodes, swelling because they are filtering out bacteria and other material that the body does not deem healthy. Should it be lymphoma and you do not want chemotherapy , your dog can indeed be made comfortable with steroids. Rather than hoping and guessing whether it is lymphoma or not, the biopsy, whether done by taking the whole lymphnode or just part of it, will give you a diagnosis and then you can deal with the disease.

My dog has lymphoma. How to ease her stiffness before her oncologist?

I am so sorry to hear of Brooke’s diagnosis. Other than some good old TLC (tender loving care), I would hold off on giving any medications until you are told to do so by the oncologist, because a lot of medications may interfere with your treatment options moving forward. 20 days is an awfully long time to wait; you may want to call and ask if you can be on a list to call if they have a cancellation, or call around and see if you can get in somewhere else sooner. You can also ask your family veterinarian if they have an oncologist they can call to try to help you expedite the process. Again I’m so sorry to hear of Brooke’s diagnosis, but lymphoma does tend to respond quite well to chemotherapy, and usually the treatment is well tolerated. I wish you and Brooke the best of luck. Fight the good fight, Brooke!!

My dog has cancer. What are the treatment options and survival rates?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Lymphoma is in fact a cancer. This is typically treated with chemotherapy. There are many chemotherapy options that can be considered such as a multi agent protocol called CHOP. There are other chemotherapeutic medications that can be considered depending on what your veterinarian has available. In general, chemotherapy is well-tolerated in dogs when done appropriately. If not able to proceed with chemotherapy, there are other options like prednisone therapy alone which in itself can help dogs with lymphoma though for a very short amount of time. The prognosis with chemotherapy varies and depends on the type of lymphoma he has (B-cell vs. T-cell) and the treatment chosen. The prognosis varies between 6 to 12 months with chemotherapy and about 2 months on just prednisone. Please feel free to request a consultation with me if you have more specific questions. My dog has a fast-growing lump. Could it be lymphoma? What prognosis?

To say it is Lymphoma it would have to be one of her lymph nodes. Typically when it is lymphoma more then one lymph node will be enlarged. If the lymph node is what is getting larger it is not always lymphoma. It can be from an infection draining, it can be viral or it can even be a tick borne disease causing the increase in the size. I recommend having a veterinarian evaluate Jamber and have them see if it is a lymph node and if so typically an aspirate is recommended and a tick panel to rule out lymphoma and tick borne diseases. If they do find lymphoma I would recommend at least a consult with a veterinary oncologist. They will be able to give you the most up to date information on different Chemotherapy options and see if this is the best option for Jamber and your family. My dog's swollen lymph nodes: Is "neoplastic process" cancer or benign?

The FNA was reported as "suggestive" not diagnostic - this would indicate some evidence of cell changes such as rapid/disorganised growth or poorly defined cells due to severe inflammation but not definitively cancerous. This is not uncommon as an FNA only looks at a small amount of loose cells and can often give inconclusive results. The rapid reduction in signs is positive that it may have been a benign, inflammatory process but unfortunately many tumours are also inflamed by their nature and do sometimes respond temporarily to medication! I would continue to monitor closely for any relapse as a precaution
