If my dog has Lyme disease, can it spread to my family or other pets?

Ticks can certainly be a problem and transmit a number of diseases including Lyme disease and others. Ticks transmit diseases by attaching to the skin and need to remain attached for a period of time to transmit disease. You do not need to worry about the tick that fell off any more than other ticks, but if you have seen other ticks on Laser, then you should look into prevention options. There are a large number of tick control products that work very well to help prevent disease transmission by ticks. If where you live has a problem with Lyme disease, then yes there is a concern. That being said, if she is up to date on her tick treatments, then it should work to kill the tick before something like Lyme disease can be transmitted. Best of luck, I hope this helps!

The tick prevention will help to prevent a tick from latching on and transmitting lyme disease. Most preventatives are about 98% effective so some ticks will still latch on. Treatment for lyme disease is antibiotics for 4-6 weeks usually. A tick must be attached and actively feeding for at least 24 hours before the Lyme organism can be transmitted. If the tick was not engorged, it has not yet fed. Monitor for lameness, lethargy, painful joints, fever or loss of appetite. You can present the tick to your vet for identification if you still have it. Consider a topical preventative, collar or oral preventative to prevent fleas and ticks. Discuss options with your veterinarian.

Themise kesion are very suspicious of where a ticj may have been attached due to the inflammation and swelling and the target lesions. Lyme disease is transmitted by 1 type of Tick but there are other Tick disease caused by different types id ticks. With that degree of inflammation I would have your vet check those area and do lab work. It will check for Tick borne diseases and check for any changes in the blood from the illness if positive.

Given that the tick is not engorged, it did not feed her on, so no disease would have been transmitted. The tick needs to bite and feed to pass along disease into her bloodstream. Every year the distribution of disease seems to spread to include new areas. So depending on your region of the country, it is a true threat. It is spread by ticks. So if you live in an area with a high incidence of disease, you will want to vaccinate your dog as well as keeping her on year long flea and tick prevention. I hope this information helps!
