Why does my pit bull puppy have a lump near her tail and anus?

There is no way of knowing for sure without an examination though this represents a reason to seek veterinary care. This is usually determined with an examination and a fine needle aspirate (FNA) or a biopsy. Treatment depends on the findings up to that point. If the lump is associated with one of the anal sacs (glands at about 4 and 8 o clock inside the anal sphincter) it could be an apocrine gland tumor. Apocrine glands are sweat glands. There are also other lumps that can occur in this area so it depends on if the lump is in the typical location for one of these glands. One thing that could be considered before surgery is a needle aspirate with cytology. We use this test commonly to try to diagnose lumps before surgery. It can be helpful to know what it is before surgery because if malignant some tests may be recommended before surgery and the surgery plan sometimes changes. Some experts may say 4 and 8, while others may say 3 and 9. The lump in the image does not appear to be located where the anal glands are. Ideally, you should have Lucky examined by your veterinarian. If this is not possible, monitor the lump for rapid change, growth or discomfort. If you see any of these changes, he will need an exam.

Anytime a new mass is noticed, I always recommend having it evaluated to see what it is and if anything needs to be done about it. Unfortunately, we can't tell anything about a mass by just looking at it. Your vet can perform a simple test called a fine needle aspirate where they use a small needle to collect some cells from the mass, then look at them under the microscope. They may even need to send the cells to the lab for a pathologist to examine them, so we know what the mass is. If it is benign, you might not need to do anything about the mass at all, but if they see cells that worry them, they might recommend removing the mass. These are masses (tumors) that should be examined by your vet. Just by looking at them it is not possible to determine whether they are malignant or benign, but your vet can do a so-called FNA (Fine Needle Aspirate) where he takes a little bit of tissue of the growth with a very fine injection needle (usually does not hurt) and sends it to a laboratory to determine malignancy. It's a little difficult to tell from your picture alone - being able to examine and touch a lump in person makes it much easier to determine what it is. This could be a skin tumor, a small abscess or inflammatory nodule, or a lesion from something like contact hypersensitivity. I would recommend having this lump examined by your veterinarian since it looks red and possibly like there is discharge. If he is licking or chewing at the lump you should put an e-collar on him until you can see a veterinarian.
