My 3-year-old Schnauzer has a lump. What could it be? Is it serious?

It could be an infection, inflammation, tumor, etc. He should be examined by a vet to determine the cause. Your vet can do a needle aspirate to help diagnose and then determine the best treatment. He may need an antibiotic, anti-inflammatory, or other medications depending on the cause.

This is likely a benign skin mass and likely what we call a sebaceous adenoma. These are benign and develop in older animals. Of course it is impossible to say for sure just by looking at it. You would need to have this removed and sent for testing to confirm what it is. However, with the thousands of sebaceous adenomas I've seen, there is a really good chance that is what you are seeing. I typically remove these during another procedure such as a dental cleaning since the animal will already be under anesthesia. If there are no upcoming procedures that need to be done, then monitoring these is just fine. Removal of these when they break open or become infected is generally recommended or when they bother the animal.

This can be a viral wart or another tumor type like a mast cell tumor, histiocytoma, among many others. This is often differentiated by a test called a fine needle aspirate (FNA) which is a pain free, inexpensive and easy procedure which in most cases will help reach a diagnosis. Sometimes a biopsy is needed for a definitive diagnosis. I recommend that you have her evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. I am really hoping for something benign. I would recommend that you have a vet check out this lump on Snowball. I am concerned that the pigmentation may mean that it could be a cancerous growth. Dogs can get melanoma, and mast cell tumors can get large and shrink repeatedly. The vet may do a needle biopsy to collect cells for examination under a microscope or recommend removing the entire lump to submit to a lab for a final diagnosis.

i am afraid these could be benign or malignant tumors. Since Nealy is an older dog, this is not uncommon. Lipomas (fatty tumors, usually benign, they can actually be hard) or mast cell tumors come to mind when looking at your photos. It could also be a very extreme allergic reaction to possibly a shampoo at the groomers. 1) do not panic 2) make an appointment with your veterinarian for an exam. He will likely want to take a so-called FNA (Fine Needle Biopsy) where he takes a small amount of tissue through an injection needle, puts this on a glass plate and looks at it under the microscope. This will give your vet an idea what he is dealing with. He may also send this material to a lab to be examined. Once you and dyour veterinarian know what type of mass you are dealing with , you can discuss treatment plans.

A Histiocytoma is the most likely type of a mass based on Jaxson's age. Rarely these masses can turn out to be a Mast Cell Tumor or Plasmacellcytoma. If it is a Histiocytoma, it should resolve within 2-3 months. I think if you want to be on the safe side, have the mass aspirated by Jaxson's veterinarian. Mast Cell tumors are not common in young dogs but I have personally seen it in a 7 months old rat terrier. Otherwise, if does not resolve within 3 months, then have it aspirated. The only risk is that IF it is a Mast Cell Tumor, you've already waited 3 months, I hope this helps!
