My dog has low platelets and mouth wounds. How can I increase them?

Pet's info: Dog | German Shepherd | Male | neutered | 1 year and 7 months old | 53 lbs

Hello . My dog has low platelet counts since 3 weeks . He had fever for few days and some wounds were formed in his mouth and they used to bleed first few days byt now the fever is gone & the wounds are getting better . Please read the blood and sonography test and help to increase his platelet count

Sorry to hear about the troubles you've been having. As the ultrasound report indicates, the best method of telling what may or may not be wrong would be by obtaining biopsies of some of the internal organs. Otherwise, the only way you are going to be able to differentiate between the disease processes that are possible are with Coco's response to therapy. Unfortunately, there is no specific medication or therapy that is designed to increase platelet counts besides straight blood or platelet transfusions. However, if Coco has a disorder that is rejecting or destroying platelets, the transfusion is only going to offer a very fleeting response. The fact that Coco was having a fever which is now gone is supportive of some sort of infectious process versus something more aggressive. I would definitely continue to have his platelet counts checked regularly however for the next few weeks in order to ascertain if things are looking up or not. Hope this all makes sense.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Luana! I have seen viruses attack the oral mucosa and also hit the bone marrow causing low white and red blood cells. The ulcers could also be from electric chord chewing or licking something caustic. Other possibilities are cancer and immune mediated. If it is a virus her blood values should improve over several days. I would have her hospitalized on IV fluids and IV antibiotics, oral sucralfate for the ulcers and an oral chlorhexidine rinse. She should also be on pain medications. She should have CBC's to check the progression of her white count at least every other day. I wish you both the best!

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Coco! I am very worried about Coco. The most common cause for bruising of the skin and gum bleeding are low platelets. This can be caused by loss, destruction or the body stopped making platelets. Common causes of destruction is immune, infectious (tick borne), secondary to medications, recent vaccination or even cancer. I recommend that Coco be seen immediately and have blood work done. Low platelets are treated with immunosuppressive doses of steroids and doxycycline. Animals with low platelets can become anemic which is life threatening. I wish you the best!

The problem here is to establish the underlying cause of thrombocytopenia (low platelets). Immune-mediated thrombocytopenia is one of the most common causes. This process usually occurs in the spleen although the liver also plays a role. Thrombocytopenia develops as platelet destruction exceeds compensatory production by the bone marrow. Immune-mediated thrombocytopenia can be classified as primary or secondary. Secondary processes can be caused by infective diseases or tumors very commonly. Usually to determine a diagnosis more tests needs to be performed like abdominal ultrasound and chest x rays. Infective diseases like Ehrlichia, Anaplasma spp for example should be ideally evaluated as well. As the doxycycline keeps killing more and more of the blood parasites the body will be able to make and retain more healthy platelets. This may take a while. Feed your dog good quality food and he will have the strength to make enough platelets. It will take time.

My puppy has low platelets. What can I do to help raise them?

Hi there, if Thanos's platelets are only slightly low I wouldn't be too concerned. When blood is taken platelets often clump together so you get a falsely low reading. You could get your vet to have a look on a blood smear for clumps and do a manual count as the machine is often a little off. Unless there is a true deficiency in platelets due to a disease there is very little you can do to increase them, and you likely don't need to anyway.

Hello, I am sorry to hear about Daisy. Based on the blood work abnormalities it is possible that Daisy has an infection secondary to tick borne disease or another organism. Many of these diseases cause destruction of the platelets. The white blood cells are part of the immune system and fight infection. It is possible that this value went up despite being on treatment secondary to fighting a severe infection. However, if Daisy is still not feeling well or these counts don’t improve it may be possible that Daisy’s platelets are low due to a different cause such as immune mediated disease. Your veterinarian can help assess for this kind of disease and determine if treatment is needed if Daisy’s blood counts do not improve or she is clinically ill. Hope this helps, good luck!

My dog has red skin. Could it be low platelets? What are the signs?

Hello. Platelets are needed for blood to clot, so if platelets are low you will see actual bruising ( black & blue spots ) or discrete blood spots in the skin or on the mucous membranes. A simple CBC ( complete blood count ) will report the number of platelets *& tell you if there is a problem or not. What you are describing with the redness & inflammation sounds more like an allergic reaction, something that can affect the skin in this area very commonly.
