My pet has low hemoglobin. How can I improve it and what food helps?

You will not notice any physical changes with a raise in platelets. They simply form clots. Energy will increase with better oxygen-carrying ability, which is accomplished by having more red blood cells. Hemoglobin is in red blood cells, and can be low with anemia or iron deficiency. Making sure that Luffy has a good-quality dog food and a few treats of iron-rich foods (like spinach or red meat) will help by giving the body the building blocks it needs to make more red blood cells.

Sounds like she is a lucky girl to have found you. As you are feeding a balanced dog food she is getting the correct nutrition she needs. So diet at this point will not address the anemia. As there are many causes of anemia if it does not correct to normal in a few weeks than further testing should be pursued to find a cause such as testing for parasites (gi), heartworms, and tick borne diseases if not already performed by the shelter. Anemia in dogs is not usually cause as a result of iron deficiency, so this shouldn't be what you are looking for in food. generally to help a dog recovering from anemia (after the primary reason has been treated), you should feed him a high quality food with high meat content such as Orijen dry food for example.

This could be due to his immune system destroying his red blood cells in a condition known as Immune Mediated Hemolytic Anemia (IMHA). Treatment for IMHA typically entails suppressing the immune system along with treating any potential infectious causes. It sounds as if the veterinarian working on Moji is treating him appropriately. Unfortunately, treating anemia can be a waiting game. Blood values need to be monitored every 2-3 days in the initial period and if the red blood cells continue to decline, he will need to be hospitalized for further treatment and closer monitoring. I am sorry we can not see your previous question when you write a new question. So from what you write here i can assume your pet is vomiting and had blood work with your family vet which showed a low red count. We can not prescribe medications via this site. This is a question and answer service but prescribing requires an exam and established relationship (this is required by law for our licenses). So, if your vet has seen marshal he or she should be able to prescribe some medication for the vomiting. I am quite concerned about the anemia as the level is getting low. I unfortunately do not know what the cause is of the anemia as there are many causes ranging from immune mediated anemia, cancer, hemorrhage, etc. Because I do not have Lucky in front of me and am unable to examine him, I cannot make the most appropriate treatment recommendations. There are no over the counter remedies that will help with this most likely as he most likely needs a further workup to pinpoint where the red blood cells are going. Until then, it is a guessing game. I would recommend trying to get him somewhere where there is a veterinarian so that he can be worked up further. The pale gums do signify anemia that could be related to kidney disease, cancer, bone marrow disease and other significant issues as well. I think your ideas are good and could be beneficial although they do not address the underlying problem. However good nutrition is always a good thing. Cats that are hard to handle are challenging and diagnostics are the only way to know what is the cause of the anemia. Certainly it is concerning that she did not do well with sedation. You may contact her vet and ask about an option of an oral light sedative called Gabapentin that tends to work well for aggressive cats without the side effects of stronger sedatives. It doesn’t work for every cat but I find it to be effective more often than not. Your vet will decide if this is an option based upon your pet’s overall health and previous medical history.
