My active rescue dog lost weight. Is she at a healthy weight now?

Poor girl. It is really common for dogs used only for breeding to not understand play and to not be very active. If she is gaining weight despite being on a diet then I would worry about thyroid issues. She doesn’t look like she is very heavy. Also remember if she was recently spayed she will gain some weight after that due to her hormones being lowered. As far as her gum disease, if she is healthy enough (heart sounds okay and blood work normal), I would talk to your vet if she is a candidate for a dental cleaning and extractions of any diseased teeth. HI, good for you for adopting an older dog! She does not look very overweight but can stand to lose a few pounds. You should be feeding her a high quality dry food like Science Diet and look for the weight loss food. Make sure you feed her what it advises you to feed on the back of the bag. treats should be low fat like baby carrots or ice cubes. Based on the picture I would say get her down to about 30kgs and see how she looks. there is no need for wet food if she likes the dry. You should be able to feel her ribs easily but not see them. She should have a tucked in waist as well. Keeping her slim will keep her healthier. Start out with short walks and gradually go on longer ones. Exercise is vey helpful in losing weight. If she feels hungry, you can give her pieces of kibble as treats or stuff a rubber Kong toy with some weight loss canned food as well. Good luck, i hope this helps!

A safe weight loss is 3-5% per month. If he started at 112 and is now 105 he lost 7 pounds which is about 7% weight loss. So, you accelerated it a bit but that is still fine. We don't want them to lose weight too quickly. I think you should have the owners do exactly what you have been doing because you know they will not be as strict as you and they will likely feed him a bit more. That should still keep him at 5% weight loss per month. When he gets to his ideal weight though they will need to evaluate if they need to increase the food a bit or leave the amount as is. The best recommendation is to have them work with their vet. Thank you for submitting your question regarding Lucy. I recommend starting by making an appointment to see a veterinarian. It is a good idea to have a general check up when you acquire any new pet. Dogs typically are done teething by 6-7 months of age. So that is quite different from what the rescue group told you of her being 1.5 years old. It is important to have an accurate age on her to determine if she should eat puppy or adult food. Her veterinarian will assess her body condition score as well and let you know if she still needs to gain weight. In many cases, it is ok to see the last couple of ribs. It is possible she is getting too much food for her size/metabolism. Sometimes we can help our pets lose weight by decreasing the amount of food we are giving. Other times we may need to switch to a prescription weight loss food for a little more help. In some instances there can be an underlying disease, such as hypothyroidism, that can be making it difficult for our pet to lose weight no matter what we do!!! For this reason, it is best to make an appointment with your vet to examine your dog. They can help determine the amount of weight she needs to lose, and help determine the correct amount to feed or recommend a diet change. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Being lean is not always a concern. A good body condition is based on muscle mass and palpation of the body, not a number on a scale. You should be able to feel her ribs while standing without pushing hard and she should have an hour glass waist from the sides and top of her body. She should also have good muscle definition in her chest and limbs. Make sure you are feeding what the bag of food says for her daily amount based on her weight. Why do you want her to be fat? It is not good for dogs to be fat. Can you post again with more information and some photos of the dog so we can help you better? Also, what are you currently feeding her? Thank you.
