My dog lost puppies, now no heat. Is she having fertility issues?

IF you really want her to be pregnant I would recommend taking her to a reproductive veterinary specialist. It is important to make sure she is ovulating and her uterus is healthy and can carry puppies. Some dogs like people cannot get pregnant. Also, you want to make sure your timing is correct on trying to breed her. As soon as you see signs of heat make sure she is able to be placed with a male.

I would recommend not breeding her anymore and getting her spayed. It is possible that she is unable to get pregnant again. If you would like to know for sure I would take her to a veterinarian for bloodwork to check her hormone level. However with her getting older it might be time to retire her and stop trying to breed her.

Since your dog was recently in heat and is now showing signs of illness I would recommend having her checked out by your veterinarian as soon as possible. She may be pregnant, having another false pregnancy, or may have a life-threatening infection in her uterus called pyometra. There are many things that could be going wrong. She could have some kind of infection or an anatomic problem. She is also a bit on the older side especially for her breed. Even though the stud has aired puppies in the past his sperm quality may not be as good for various reasons. I’d recommend seeing a vet to start - your best bet would be to find someone who is particularly interested in reproduction in your area. They would probably recommend blood work after an exam and might recommend some infectious disease testing. When she is ready to go into heat they might recommend hormone testing to help determine the ideal time to breed.

She may have ovarian cysts or other hormonal problems that keep her from cycling properly. I suggest you take her to a veterinarian who can give her a proper breeding exam, take some blood to check her hormonal status and do some vaginal cytology to check her cycle status. He can also do an ultrasound exam of the ovaries. Once he has all those results he can make a plan on how to start her cycle, ie get her in heat to be bred.

Pyometra can cause damage to the lining of the womb and can reduce fertility. In many cases a 14day course of antibiotics will clear the infection in young bitches but if symptoms persist or recur before her next cycle the chances of successful breeding are much reduced and surgical neutering may be recommended. If breeding is intended, it should be done on the next heat cycle

Hello. I am so sorry for your worries with Luna. Some dogs can have rather quiet or silent heats where you do not see the overt vulvar swelling & bloody discharge. If you were my client, I would strongly recommend spaying Luna. She may not be truly infertile, but there does seem to be some hormonal issues with her.
