My dog is losing permanent teeth. Is it gum disease? What's next?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Maltese | Female | spayed | 3 years and 7 months old | 6 lbs

My dog (3 years of age, Maltese, small and white) has lost 2 of her permanent teeth. Her diet consists of lots of carrot and beetroot and milk with egg and flatbread. We tried removing the carrots and beetroot from her diet but that’s when we noticed she lost her second tooth. We even added vitamins to her dinner so she gets all the nutrients she needs. Is it gum disease? How do I know? Is it serious?

Hi, I think in general Maltese have a bit of predisposition for dental disease. I would have her checked over to discuss her teeth condition considering her diet. It is difficult for me to say wether she had dental disease without looking at her mouth ! I hope you are feeding also a complete dog food diet along side the ingredients you are mentioning as she may lack some nutrients and vitamins. Hope this helps !
