Why is my dog limping on his front leg and struggling to stand?

Poor Brodie! Limping can be from injury, arthritis or other more serious problems. I would try to keep him confined and resting for a few days to see if it's better. Out for bathroom on a leash and right back in, no stairs, no running or jumping, etc. Keep him quiet. If it's not better after that, then you should see your vet for an exam and maybe xrays. I hope he feels better soon!

Since it seems to have gone on longer than this, I would recommend that he sees his veterinarian. He will likely need some x-rays of the affected bone or joint and some prescription pain medication. In the meantime, keep him quiet (no running, jumping, playing). He should avoid stairs as much as possible and go out on a leash to go potty. Do not give him any over-the-counter medications. His pain can be caused by many things, but to determine which are to blame, he needs to be examined by a veterinarian. You're right that trauma could cause this, however it is important to localize where the trauma is. A vet can do this by doing an orthopedic exam, which basically manipulates all the joints and bones to see if there is any disease. His pain can also be due to back issues, which would need X-rays to diagnose, or even arthritis. It is also important to rule out infectious (bacterial) causes of pain or any other underlying disease that Buddy may have. To keep him comfortable before he is seen by a vet, you can try to limit Buddy's activity - minimize his using the stairs, walking/running, and playing. I hope this is helpful!

Poor Gemma! It sounds like she is uncomfortable on her front legs. She could be dealing with any number of issues-I would recommend a visit to your regular veterinarian for a checkup. They can do a thorough physical exam to look for any problems, and may recommend X-rays to check for things like fractures, panosteitis or HOD. Do not give any medications to your dog without the advice of your veterinarian. Many OTC medications can be toxic to pets. Ideally, Ziggy should be examined by your veterinarian or a veterinary orthopedic specialist to diagnose ligament damage, arthritic conditions, fractures or tumors. X-rays of the knees and hips will likely be recommended. These can be done under anesthesia or sedation. A veterinary house all service may be an option for an exam. Afterwards, a sedative and/or pain management can be dispensed to make the trip to the clinic easier and less stressful for all parties.
