My dog limped after jumping, but is now walking normally. Vet needed?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | German Shepherd | Male | unneutered | 62 lbs

My male GSD landed badly on his right hindleg (this happend in our carpeted living room) after jumping up in the air to catch a toy. He cried a bit and limped for 5 minutes and throughout the night he gradually got better but is still limping slightly. The next day he acted like nothing happend yesterday. He even had zoomies across our living room after waking up. Should I be still take him to the vet to check up on his leg? He’s walking normally now and no swelling on his back paw/leg.

Hello. As long as Killian is back to normal, with no limping or swelling, then he does not need to see a veterinarian. He probably just had a minor sprain, but this might be a warning to go easy on letting Killian jump so high. He is a big dog & coming down abnormally on a leg could certainly lead to a ruptured or torn ACL. Just have him take it easy for the next few days. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
