Dog licking red, swollen spot: Is it a bite, rash, or irritation?

Hello. Is it possible that Charlie was bitten by something like a tick? This just looks like an acute inflammatory reaction. If you have some hydrocortisone cream, I would just rub a bit into the skin several times a day. If you do not have any cream, then please visit your Petco who will have several brands, including Zymox which is a very good product. I agree, this area is likely itching a lot. You need to have Charlie seen by a vet for this in the morning. Tonight, put an Ecollar on him to keep him from licking it more. Yikes! That is very inflamed and I agree that it looks swollen. I recommend to get an elizabethan collar for him and make sure he wears it tonight while you are asleep and any time you are not directly watching him. Licking it may make it worse. As long as Scooter will tolerate it, you can gently wash the area with soap and rinse it well. Applying a cool (not cold) compress may also bring some relief to him. Do this a few times through out the evening. You can apply a dab of coconut oil on the area and rub it in gently. Make sure Scooter does not lick this off as it may upset his tummy. Definitely keep his appointment tomorrow. Poor guy! I hope this is helpful and please feel free to post any additional questions.

Hi there and thank you for your post! From the pictures you posted, it looks like Chico may have a hot spot (moist dermatitis) area in front of his prepuce / penis. Some of the area appears to be yellow and this might indicate it is infected. I would get your vet to check this out so that Chico can receive the appropriate treatment. Most likely he will need an oral antibiotic and some topical ointments to treat the area. If he is constantly licking the area, I would get a plastic cone to keep around his head to prevent him from licking the area and making it worse. I hope this helps! Poor guy. I am so sorry Charlie is ill and has this suspicious erythematous lesion on his belly near his penis. This looks like a possible mild bleeding under the skin or potentially an adverse reaction to a tick or black fly bite. A black fly bite wouln't cause systemic illness however (not eating, lethargy). There is possibly an internal issues going on here and more information is needed to determine what exactly. I would recommend taking him in to the vet first thing in the morning. He should be stable enough to wait until morning as long as she is not having any of the following: 1) Pale gums 2) Severe lethargy and non-responsiveness 3) Excessive vomiting that is continuous 4) More red spots developing on the skin in various places If he does not show any of the above symptoms, then it is likely ok to wait until morning to get Charlie seen and fully evaluated. The main concern is if there is an underlying bleeding disorder or immune system disoder (i.e. IMHA, IMTP). I hope that things work out well for your pet Charlie and that he feels better soon!
