Why is my Husky still licking after new food? Is it a grain allergy?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Siberian Husky | Female | spayed | 6 years and 4 months old | 45 lbs

I have a 6 year old Siberian Husky and about three weeks ago i switched her to a new food that was now grain inclusive. I took her last week to the vet because she would not stop licking her butt and it was red and swollen. Turned she had an anal gland abscess/infection. Fast Forward a week and they checked said its looking good, however she still licks it. Could this all be an allergy from me switching her food & developed in two weeks or does this take longer to develop and is coincidental.

Unfortunately, that us hard to know. I recommend to continue feeding the diet for at least one month. If Kaiya continues to have problems, then I would switch the diet. The MOST common allergy is to protein, not carbs/grains.
I would make a list of the diets she has eaten and see if you can find a pattern in the ingredients and try to narrow down what could be causing her to react. Grain allergies are very rare but they are out there. In that instance, consult with your veterinarian about diet recommendation. Just so you know, wheat is the most common culprit for grain allergies. I hope this helps.
