Dog licking/biting rear but no fleas? What could be the cause?

This could be due to an allergy, although it could also be infection or mites. + I would recommend the following: + Flea treatment should be prescribed by a veterinarian. It is often combined with lungworm/intestinal worm treatment. Ensure all pets in the house are up to date and treated as per the frequency recommended + If your parasite treatment has lapsed, or you have an infestation, treat the house with an insecticide spray such as RIP flea/Acclaim/Indorex/Frontline house spray. These sprays are toxic to cats and reptiles/fish/birds so please follow the instructions on the bottles carefully + If the itching continues despite the above it would be recommended to start on a hydrolysed food trial with Purina HA, Hills z/d, or Royal Canin Anallergenic for 6-8weeks. This must be fed strictly and exclusively to see if it works, which means absolutely no treats or human foods otherwise the results are inconclusive + If all of this makes no difference then you will need to discuss investigations into environmental allergies with your vet, or be referred to a dermatologist + If a food allergy is ruled out then consider a skin diet (Royal Canin skin/Hills Derm Defence) or a skin supplement such as Yuderm, to help boost the skin barrier and prevent/reduce flare ups in the future. The following products can be found online and can be tried as a first line approach: Douxo PS Calm shampoo, Essential 6 spot on by dermoscent, Krillex Krill oil chews.

This could be an infected fleabite. Unfortunately fleas only hop on the body of your pet when they want to feed, then they hop off again and stay in your pet's environment. So you need to treat all pets in the household as well as the environment (which contains the fleas, their eggs and larvae). Flea treatment:  1) Get some flea medication such as a Flea spray or a spot on from a pet shop or your veterinarian and apply monthly 2) get flea powder, put some in your vacuum cleaner bag and vacuum your house and furniture and also non-carpeted areas frequently to remove flea larvae and eggs which live off house dust., Dispose of the bag in the trash outside. Hot-wash all the pet's bedding, If you do this diligently for a few months you will get rid of the fleas. Flea products: Spot-ons and/or chews Advantage, Advantix Advantage Multi (Advocate in the UK) Frontline (ticks as well) Bravecto spot on (ticks as well) - for cats, in tablet form for dogs Simparica, Nexgard Revolution (stronghold in the UK) Tablets: comfortis (will only kill fleas once) Collar: Seresto (ticks as well) House spray: Indorex

this is likely due to an allergy whether it be fleas or environmental. A good bath will help. When you take her to your vet that can check her skin. They may also check her stool sample for parasites and her anal glands to make sure they are not impacted to cause the scooting on the floor.

Those spots on Lucy could be several things including allergies to fleas, allergies to something in the environment, food allergy or endocrine disease. Each one of these problems is detected and addressed differently and I recommend to discuss with your veterinarian which one to start hunting down first. Parasites are often ruled out with an oral medication like Simparica. Food allergy is best ruled out with a diet trial using a hydrolyzed protein. Endocrine diseases are detected with blood work. Environmental allergies are a little more difficult to detect but a response to therapy or a blood test can give an indication. Once you figure out and address the underlying cause, the lesions should not come back. There are a couple things you can do at home and they can help but they may not address the underlying cause. You can try adding in an omega 3 fatty acid supplement for dogs, this can help improve the skin health. You may also try changing her diet to something like Royal Canin or Nutro as they are aimed at skin health. Also protect the area from trauma by having your pup wear an elizabethan collar at all times. I hope this helps and please feel free to post any additional questions.

This itchiness can be caused by fleas, mites, ringworm, or allergies. If she isn't up to date on her flea treatment, I can give you one for her. First, I would give her Capstar. It's a one time pill that starts killing fleas within 30 minutes. Then follow up with a spot on treatment, such as Advantage or Revolution. This is a treatment that has to be used once a month. You will also have to disinfect the environment. Wash her bedding in hot soapy water, and vacuum the furniture and carpet surfaces. You can use a spray to kill fleas in the house, such as Indorex, or a flea bomb would work well to kill the fleas in the home. If she is up to date on her flea treatment, I recommend taking her into the vet for an exam today or tomorrow. The vet can do blood tests, skin scrapings, and use a Wood's lamp to diagnose allergies, mites, and ringworm. Once the cause of the itching is found, the vet can prescribe the appropriate treatment. Check Fred very diligently for fleas and /or flea poop near her tail and hind legs. This does sound like she has fleas, especially if you do not do regular flea prevention. I doubt this has anything to do with eating her evening meal. It really comes down to figuring out what is causing his allergies so that they can be treated or the specific allergen avoided. A secondary infection is likely and also needs to be addressed. There are many things that can cause allergies though in most cases they can be broken down into 3 big categories: flea, food and environmental allergies. Allergies are usually worked up in a stepwise fashion starting with flea allergies as this is the easiest and cheapest to take care of. If not on a flea preventative, then it would be a good idea to get started on one. If already on one then it would be a good idea to change to something else (there are many new products out in the market). If not improved in 1-3 months then it is time to move on and check for food allergies by switching to a novel diet (new protein and new carbohydrate). If that does not seem to be the issue then you are left out having to check for environmental allergies which require blood and/or skin tests. Allergies can be very frustrating to deal with at first but so rewarding at the end when we are able to treat them effectively!
