My dog licked a sore. Can I use betadine for temporary relief before vet?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Lhasa Apso | Male | unneutered | 22 lbs

My dog chewing and licked himself so much that he has a sore. Can I use betadine or soframaycin for the night until we get to the vet tomorrow? What could I do to provide temporary relief?

Hello, thank you for your question about Snowy.

It sounds like Snowy has developed a hot spot, which is not uncommon from chewing and licking. You could gently cleanse the spot with a very dilute betadine solution until you can see your veterinarian, but I would not apply any ointments. Ointments can hold in moisture of the area and delay healing.

Hope this helps!
