My dog won't eat, still lethargic after cough medicine. What's wrong?

My dog won't eat. Had a cough the past few days and decreased appetite (would eat only a little); had her on medicine and now she doesn't seem to cough but won't eat at all. Still lethargic but does move/run around and drinks water normally.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding your dog. I recommend that she sees her veterinarian again. It is worrisome that she still will not eat. Based on her exam findings, she may need to have x-rays of her chest and laboratory work done. It is important to determine why she is not feeling well so that she can be helped. Poor girl. This sounds like Dinero may be having a hypersenstivity reaction to the medication. Lethargy and vomiting are common symptoms of a medical allergy. She also could just be tired from her vomiting episode and just overall not feeling well.

I would recommennd holding off on her next dose and contacting the vet who prescribed it to her in the morning for additional instructions on how to proceed with her care. There may be another medication that can be given as an alternative. Also depending on how lethargic she is and if she is able to bounce back after the medicine is out of her system, the vet may lower her dosage and have you try the medication again to see if this issue is repetitive.

If she vomits again, it is best to hold off on food for at least 12 hrs before feeding again to allow her stomach to settle down. I hope that your pet Dinero feels better soon and is able to take her medication with no further problems! Best wishes and take care.

I would be concerned that Bell hasn't returned to normal after 12-24 hours. While heat injury is possible usually dogs have issues sooner than now such as seizures, diarrhea, bruising and/or collapse. She could have a problem with her GI tract, something stuck in her esophagus or even a respiratory issues causing her changes. If she continues to cough, seems lethargic/lack of energy, or has any vomiting, diarrhea or continues to have a decreased appetite today she needs to be seen by a veterinarian. I would try calling your veterinarian today as they sometimes have an oncall service or an emergency veterinarian on call to answer questions as well.

My new dog is coughing, lethargic, and not eating. Vet needed?

It sounds as though Vito has been through quite a bit over the past week! It is concerning that he is now lethargic, not eating, and coughing, after being normal for a week after his procedures. My main concern is that he may have developed kennel cough or canine influenza after being in a shelter situation. To answer your question, yes, I do think you should take him to the vet for evaluation. In addition to a physical exam, Vito may need to have chest x-rays taken or blood testing performed. My dog was lethargic and limping, now has a strange cough. What to do?

I am sorry Dakota has not been feeling well. Since she has had so much going on with the being lethargic, limping and now coughing I would recommend taking her to a vet for a good physical exam. Some does will cough secondary to heartworm disease, heart disease, asthma/allergies, infection and even fungal disease. Since she is feeling well hopefully nothing serious is going on but a vet visit would be best to be 100% sure. The vet can listen to her lungs and take x-rays if needed to determine the cause of the cough. I hope Dakota feels better soon and thanks for using pet coach

My senior dog is coughing, vomiting, lethargic, and won't eat. Why?

Hello and thank you for reaching out to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. I'm sorry to hear about Booda, she sounds very sick. Since she is vomiting, acting lethargic, not eating and having neurological signs, I would have her seen by a veterinarian as soon as possible. Especially in an older Golden, cancer is a top differential for the cause of her clinical signs. Your veterinarian will want to do a complete physical exam, along with bloodwork and/or x-rays to look for evidence of disease. Because she is coughing, I'm afraid she may have cancer in her lungs, or less likely something like pneumonia. Unfortunately, you may have to consider thinking about her quality of life. Vomiting, coughing, not eating and being unresponsive to stimuli are not indicative of a good quality of life. I hope this is helpful, and I'm very sorry to hear about Booda.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Romy. I am concerned that she may have a respiratory tract infection based on the symptoms that you have described. She will need to see a veterinarian. It is ideal for her to be seen today as she is not eating and drinking. Given this, it will be easy for her to become dehydrated. Hopefully she just has an upper respiratory tract infection and needs an antibiotic and possibly some fluids if she is dehydrated. Dogs can develop pneumonia though and this would be more serious. Try to encourage her to eat and drink even small amounts. Keep her home and away from other dogs as she may be contagious. I hope this information helps!

My dog has kennel cough. Is it normal for her to get worse and not eat?

Congrats on your new dog, but I'm sorry Willow is sick! Kennel cough doesn't have a cure, the medications are used to lessen the severity of the symptoms, but it sounds like the disease is getting a bit worse. I would rest her tonight, keep her in a well humidified area, and use a harness instead of a collar when you take her out to potty to minimize coughing. You can also try bringing her into the bathroom with you when you shower as the steam may help with her congestion. Try gently warming up really smelly wet food to tempt her to eat. Dogs won't eat if they can't smell their food, so gently warming it may entice her to eat. I would have her seen by a vet again in the morning since her symptoms have become more severe. The vet may prescribe additional medications to help with them. Good luck, I hope this helps!
