My dog is lethargic, throwing up, and walking hunched over. Why?

My dog woke up this morning seeming lethargic, he vomited on the floor and is walking around hunched over with his tail uncurled (pug)

This sounds like he’s in pain. He may have eaten something that upset his stomach and has intestinal cramping. Or since he’s still a pup I’m worried he may have eaten a toy or sock that could cause an intestinal blockage. If this continues I would certainly bring him in for an exam and abdominal X-ray. Having an intestinal blockage can become life threatening without treatment. They can also give him pain medication so he’s more comfortable. This sounds serious so I wouldn’t ignore these symptoms. Throwing up can have many causes. It is basically a problem with the stomach and intestines caused by a food over sensitivity, eating something that does not agree with the dog, intestinal parasites, bacterial infection, viral infection, the weather, food change, stress, etc.
I would fast Boone for 12-24 hours and then put him on bland food for two days, such as boiled white rice and boiled white boneless chicken meat, fed in small quantities over several feeds and then transition back to his regular food slowly over a few days. If the vomiting increases, or if he stays lethargic, he needs to see a veterinarian for an exam as there may be something more serious such as an infection going on.
All that said, lethargy and vomiting and abdominal pain can be typical signs of a parvovirus infection. If your dog has not finished a 4-course vaccination there is a chance that he may indeed be suffering from parvo. So if he is vomiting often and lethargic I recommend he be seen today at an emergency vet clinic rather than wait.

It is hard to know what exactly is going on however he is displaying some signs of potentially being sick such as labored breathing, lethargy and vomiting. I highly recommend that you have Harley evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. They would be able to perform a physical examination and start there depending on what they think could be wrong. For example, if his lung sounds appear abnormal, they may proceed with chest X-rays. Vomiting and inappetence can occur from many conditions such as foreign body ingestion and obstruction, pancreatitis, gastroenteritis, dietary indiscretion, among other possibilities. I am concerned that he could be showing signs of an obstruction which is something that requires therapy which sometimes includes surgery. I recommend that you have Jager evaluated by a veterinarian at this point for further assessment and treatment. This will likely require bloodwork and abdominal imaging in terms of diagnostics. Treatment would be based on findings. At the very least your veterinarian could start him on medications to make him feel better. In the meantime, keep water available at all times to try to prevent dehydration. Good luck and have a good night!

My 4-month-old puppy is sick, not eating, vomiting, diarrhea

Vomiting, diarrhea and lethargy are quite concerning in any dog, especially puppies because of the diseases they can get such as parvovirus. I recommend that you have him evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment. They would be able to check for this disease as well as checking for other possibilities such as intestinal worms or other infections. The sooner these diseases are diagnosed the better the outcome tends to be. At the very least, Gus can be started on anti-nausea and anti-diarrhea medications and his hydration status can be checked. My dog is lean, whining, and vomiting. Should I take him to the vet?

If Buddy seems off and is whimpering and vomiting, he may have something going on causing him discomfort. Because of his age, I would be suspicious of a viral infection, something he ate that he is having an indiscretion to or a foreign object he ate that is lodged somewhere in his intestines causing problems. Because there are multiple causes and it is difficult to determine what it is for sure, I would have a veterinarian examine Buddy so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. I would consider having his blood tested and abdominal x-rays taken. I hope this helps and that Buddy gets better soon! My dog is vomiting water, not eating, and lethargic. What's wrong?

Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. I am sorry that Vito isn't feeling well. What you are describing is very worrisome for an obstruction/blockage in the gut. This can happen when dogs eat socks/underwear, balls, toys, cardboard, peach pits, etc. I strongly recommend you bring him to a vet right away for x-rays. Surgery might be required as a life-saving measure. If the x-rays are clear, your vet will be able to give a medication to stop the vomiting and help, as this sounds like it is either an obstruction, or a severe gastritis that requires medication and possibly IV fluids to correct. Why is my lethargic dog yelping when I touch his stomach or lift him?

It could be that he has pain in his back causing him to yelp when you pick him up or touch his stomach. I recommend resting him for the next 48 hours. No running, jumping, or playing. Take him out to toilet on a leash, and bring him right back in when he's done. If he still appears painful after this time, then I would take him into the vet for an exam. The vet can diagnose where the pain is coming from, and can dictate a treatment plan for it. He may also benefit from some pain medications, which the vet can prescribe. Please do not give him any human pain medications, as many are toxic to dogs and can be fatal if given. I hope this helps!

I recommend that you have your pup evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Likely diagnostics to be performed include abdominal imaging and general bloodwork.
