Why is my 14-year-old Labrador lethargic, panting, and eating slowly?

My dog is 14 years old, a chocolate Labrador and the past day or so he's gotten really lethargic, staying in certain places and not really moving a lot and today he's started eating slowly which is very unlike him (but he is actually still eating) and he's panting a lot and breathing heavily. What could be happening?? I'm worried

I'm sorry Odie isn't doing well! He could be in pain, causing him to be very lethargic and not moving a lot. Pain would also cause him to pant and eat less. His pain could be caused by arthritis, which is common in senior dogs, or hip dysplasia. There could also be other medical illnesses causing his symptoms, such as heart disease or cancer. I would have him seen by a vet today for a physical exam, geriatric blood test, urinalysis, and possibly chest and hip x-rays. These tests will determine what is causing his symptoms so he can be treated as needed.

Sorry Odie isn't feeling well. It sounds like you pay very close attention to your pet's behaviors to notice small differences-this is wonderful and actually helps us a lot. With his age, I am at increased concern for organ health. If he hasn't had any bloodwork performed recently, it may be time to take him in for a checkup. As seniors, it is very important we keep an eye on the organ functions (especially liver and kidneys) in our pets. Panting and breathing heavily can be a sign of discomfort or pain as well. If your dog seems painful on his abdomen, or is bloated in any way it is likely your doctor will also recommend x rays to make sure everything looks normal from the inside (no tumors, etc)

I would recommend having him seen as soon as you can, especially if these conditions persist. Tell your vet what's going on so they know how long and exactly what to expect, and normally we will work with you as best we can if one is suddenly very ill.

There are many things this could be: * laryngeal paralysis * congestive heart failure * severe pain * hypothyroidism * pulmonary thromboembolism * pneumonia * bloat * many more possibilities.... Why is my 14-year-old dog not eating, losing weight, and slowing down?

I would definitely recommend some blood work, if this hasn't been done recently. Older dogs are prone to a number of health issues that can cause decreased appetite along with being less active - chronic kidney disease and hypothyroidism are two possibilities that are both very common. In many cases, these issues are treatable (at least to some extent) once a diagnosis is made, so it's well worth checking for them if you can - hopefully, there are some things you can do to make him feel better for as long as possible, even though he's getting older.

Why is my senior lab panting heavily and refusing to eat or drink?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Dakota! I would have her seen by a Vet today due to her age. There are many things that can cause an older lab to stop eating and start panting. I worry about heart failure, pneumonia, cancer or anemia from a bleeding mass in the belly. Even a fever can cause these signs. I would have her examined and see if chest and belly X-rays needs to be done. They may also recommend blood work as well. My dog is lethargic, won't eat, and walks slowly. What's wrong?

Hello and thank you for reaching out to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. I'm sorry to hear that Brak n Jan is not doing well at home. Any signs of lethargy, decreased appetite, and acting abnormal, especially in a younger dog, warrant a visit to the veterinarian. A 2 year old Lab should have lots of energy and a good appetite if they are healthy. It is possible that he is systemically sick, either with gastrointestinal disease, liver or kidney disease, or other metabolic issue causing him to feel unwell. He may also be painful somewhere, causing him to not want to eat and walk slowly. I recommend contacting your veterinarian to have him seen at the next available appointment. Your vet will likely recommend bloodwork to look for any evidence of infection or organ abnormalities that can be treated. Do NOT give any pain medications that are intended for humans to Brak n Jan, as these can be fatally toxic to dogs. I hope this is helpful!

My senior dog won't eat for days and is panting. What's wrong?

Panting heavily when it is not hot in the environment is usually a sign of pain or discomfort. If Mia has had a poor appetite for a few days, it is possible that she has a chronic condition such as liver or kidney disease that can be diagnosed on routine screening bloodwork. Unfortunately at age 12, especially for a large breed dog, serious/not curable conditions such as cancer (usually diagnosed on chest/abdominal X-rays) is a possibility as well. Less scary possible causes of the panting could be discomfort from pancreatitis which is often caused by table food and treated with fluid therapy +/- anti-nausea medication, or pain from arthritis which can be treated with pain meds pending screening bloodwork to rule out pre-existing liver/kidney issues. Especially since Mia seems uncomfortable, it would be best to bring her to your vet for an evaluation. Good luck!

Thanks for visiting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. These symptoms are concerning, especially coming from an older pet lIke Blue. His warm feeling body could indicate an internal infection or inflammatory disorder, and his panting and swollen stomach could indicate underlying heart disease, an infection, or even cancer has to be considered here. I would highly recommend taking him in to your vet to have some testing done as soon as possible. The vet needs to do some bloodwork analysis and an x-ray to find out the underlying cause for his symptoms, since there are several disease processes that can cause the same symptoms. I do hope that Blue is able to make a full and speedy recovery with a diagnosis that is readily treatable. I wish you all the best! Take care.
