My small dog's leg popped and she was limping. Is it a luxating patella?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Yorkshire Terrier | Female | unspayed | 4 years and 1 month old | 6 lbs

I’m worried that my dog has a luxated patella. She’s a 6 lb mini yorkie/maltese. She’s 4 years old and pretty active, healthy weight, and is generally healthy. She was acting fine and then all of a sudden she started acting weird, crouching while she walked and trembling. i put her on the bed to try to find what was wrong, gently pulled her leg back and heard a pop. directly after, she was acting fine again. shes been fine since, but i’m worried.

Hi there. From what you describe, it certainly sounds like she may have a luxating patella. This is a common problem in toy breed dogs. I would recommend taking her to the vet for an exam to determine if this is the problem. If so, it may be able to be managed with anti-inflammatory medication if it's only causing minor, occasional problems, or surgery may be recommended if the problem is more severe.
