Why is my dog's leg itchy, sore, and limping? Can I treat it at home?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | 4 years and 1 month old | 17 lbs

My dog has been itching and biting at the top of her back left leg, she has messed with it so much there is now a sore there and now when she first gets up to walk around she will start to limp on it for a little while then stop.I don't know what to do and I don't have the money to take her to a vet at the moment,please help.

Place an e-collar (cone) on Bella to prevent further licking or chewing. Examine her closely for fleas or evidence of fleas. If you find fleas, use a topical preventative such as Frontline Plus or similar topical. Do this for at least three consecutive months, preferably year round. Vacuum everywhere she has been and wash all bedding. Using an area treatment such as Knockout ES in conjunction with consistent topical prevention should solve your flea problem.
If you don't see fleas, treat the spot as best as you can. Keep the area clean and dry. Keeping the e-collar in place for a week or so may be enough to allow healing. The spot should begin to dry up and heal in a few days. Do not apply anything topically without the advice of your veterinarian. If the area does not heal or if it spreads, you will need to see the vet for an exam and diagnostics to diagnose the cause. Discuss payment plans or alternative financing options such as CareCredit (www.carecredit.com) with your veterinarian.

My dog chews her butt raw with scabs. How can I treat it at home?

There are many reasons Lillie could be chewing including parasites, allergies (both environmental and food), and thyroid issues. At home you can stop the chewing by making her wear an Elizabethan collar at all times. Go ahead and treat her for fleas once a month for at least 2 months. If you want an over the counter product, pick Frontline but there are better products out there like Cheristan or Comfortis. Regarding any wounds, you can cleanse them using hand soap (rinse well) and then apply a little coconut oil- rub it in well and do not allow her to lick it. If she does not get better within a couple weeks or if she gets worse, try to figure out a way to take her in to see the veterinarian. Many clients is Care Credit or Scratch. My dog keeps biting her leg until it bleeds. Why and what to do?

The most likely cause would be a skin condition of some kind, causing her to be itchy - some common possibilities would include allergies, fleas, a bacterial or fungal skin infection, or skin mites (mange). Treatment will depend on what the cause is, so I would recommend having her examined by a vet - he/she can do a simple test called a skin scrape if needed to help diagnose the problem. In the meantime, I would suggest getting her an e-collar (plastic cone) to keep her from continuing to chew at her leg and make things worse until you can get her in to see a vet.
