My dog's knee pops after leg surgery. Should I get a second opinion?

I can certainly understand being very upset and worried about Iola! When MPL surgery is done, the goal is to prevent the kneeing from popping out of it's correct anatomical place in the patellar groove, so it should not be pooping a week afterwards. Unfortunately, it is possible that internal sutures can fail even when owners strictly follow the discharge instructions, so it is possible this has happened to Iola. Without seeing her in person, I can't say this for sure. Even though the place where she had her surgery done is a surgery only clinic, they would want to know if there were post-operative complications such as this. I recommend giving them a call first thing in the morning if possible to speak to the vet who did the surgery about this possible complication. In the meantime, continue the strict cage rest, and walking only to go to the bathroom.

Poor guy. Popping can indicate that the bones are not aligned well and essentially hitting one another. A dog being lazy would not have anything to do with an abnormal gait or a popping noise. The best piece of advice here would be to do post-op x-rays to check out the hips again and make sure things are aligning well. If things are looking ok on x-ray, then it really is a mystery as to why there is a popping sound. A referral to an orthopedic specialist would be recommended if you want to look further into this. IT is good that Nikko doesn't seem painful however, so benign neglect is also an option here. I hope that you get to the bottom of this strange post-surgery issue that Nikko is having. Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Knees 'popping out' in a Pug is usually due to a luxating patella. This is a condition that can be surgically corrected, and given Rascal's age of 2, this is recommended so that he doesn't develop painful arthritis for the rest of his life. The other possible condition is a 'torn cruciate', and this also can be corrected with surgery. Carprofen is a medication of the class 'NSAIDs'. This are hard on the liver, kidney and gut. It is good for breakthrough pain, however long-term this isn't something you want to continue on. Please discuss with your vet about surgical correction options for Rascal, as well as other options for pain medications longer term (Gabapentin for example). NSAIDs do work best, they just come with high risks of side effects. Best of luck with Rascal, I hope he feels better soon!

A second opinion won’t hurt or maybe a recheck with the first to clarify something things No surgery can undue arthritis but it can stabilize the patella and minimize further arthritis in the future. I would clarify if this is what he believes or if there is something else going on that is causing pain such as concurrent hip disease. It is unfortunate to spend that much money in a surgery and put your pet thru a surgery when they will still be in pain

Hi there, Yes, you are correct, surgery is the best way to fix this, but often times anti-inflammatory medications can alleviate the pain. I'd recommend rimadyl because it's safe for dogs. I'd also recommend a glucosamine supplement for cartilage protection. I like Dasuquin Advanced. I hope that helps and that Lovie feels better!

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Austa! What a beautiful girl! The most common injury in the hind leg is an ACL tear. X-rays can look normal since it is a ligament. If 2 Vets haven't diagnosed the issue then I would see a specialist. The Vet school is a fine option as are specialty Veterinary Centers that have an orthopedic surgeon. I hope this helps!

BamBam is the CUTEST! I am so sorry that he has fractured his leg. It is possible that he is using the leg simply becuase the bandage is keep it stable. I would make sure he is staying very confined. I would carry him out to use the potty and make sure he is going out often so he doesn't pee on him bandage. If his bandage gets pee on it, it will need to be changed by your vet. If you are unsure about his healing process, you can always get a second opinion. It never hurts! I hope this helps!
