How much protein should a dog that weighs 37 lbs be given if he has chronic kidney failure?

HE should be on a low protein diet, preferably a prescription diet for kidneys (such as Renal from Royal Canine). you won't find an over the counter food that is suitable for this condition. homemade diet is also an option, you can find some ideas here:

I would definitely go with the Royal Canin Renal support. This food is specifically formulated for dogs with kidney failure. The problem with a homemade diet is that it is extremely difficult to get the correct balance of nutrients, and you could accidentally end up giving him too much phosphorus in trying to meet his other nutritional needs. Too much phosphorous is detrimental to his kidneys while they are failing, and it's best to stay with a specially formulated food recommended by your vet. Keep in mind as well that the information you are getting from the internet is not typically provided by vets, but rather lay people who have no training in animal health or nutrition. In my opinion, when it comes to the health of your dog, it's best to listen to the experts who have done the training and have the knowledge to correctly treat your dog, who is the vet. I think giving Sooky royal canin renal food every day is a good diet for him if he has kidney problems. There is also science diet K/D. You want a diet that is lower in phosphorus and protein to make it easier on the kidneys to digest. I would also recommend to feed canned food if possible as this helps to increase moisture in the diet and helps to flush the kidneys. I hope this helps!

I hate to hear that Lily is having an issue eating her food. I would advise too try several renal diets. Royal Canin makes three different formulas. Purina and Science diet also make their own version. The best medicine would be for her to eat only a renal diet but sometimes pets have other ideas. If you cannot find a food that she likes and will readily eat, try mixing in about 25% of the renal diet in with 75% of her normal kibble. Every few days gradually increase the renal food. Even if she never goes on the renal diet fully, it's still better than not eating it at all. Try the canned renal diets as well (once again, all the brands carry this formula). If you want to try making her food at home, you will need to work with a veterinary nutritionist. Renal diets need carefully controlled protein, phosphorus and potassium levels. My dog has early kidney failure. Is her new wet food protein enough?

Hello. With a creatinine of 1.7, Chica is classified in early Stage 2 chronic kidney disease according to the International Renal Interest Society ( https://www.iris.com ). We really need more information to proceed with any treatment recommendations. Your veterinarian needs to obtain an SDMA value, a urine protein creatinine (UPC ) ratio & obtain a good blood pressure measurement. If the SDMA, UPC ratio are in the normal range & blood pressures are fine, then I would not recommend making changes to her diet. It would not hurt to start a kidney diet, like one made by Hill's, Royal Canin or Purina, but do not worry about fat levels ( unless Chica is obese ) & low protein ( especially if there is no protein in the urine ). We do not want to restrict protein too early in the disease because we do not want these patients to start losing weight from loss of protein. Once you have all the information, it will be much easier to follow Chica's condition & recommend dietary & other therapeutic remedies. Thanks for using PetCoach.

If Sooky has chronic kidney disease a prescription kidney diet might be recommended by your vet. These diets can help slow the progression of kidney disease and usually have different ratios of essential fatty acids. They also help keep electrolytes balanced and phosphorous low. They are not ideal for animals that have normal kidney function so you should check with your vet and see what diet is recommended for Sooky in particular.

Pets with renal disease need to eat a special dog food aimed at reducing the work load on the kidneys. Hill Science Diet and Royal Canin both make special formulas for this condition. Some of these pets need intravenous fluids for up to three days. Some of them need supportive care in the form of subcutaneous fluids, anti-acids and antivomiting medications. If she is leaking protein in her urine, she also needs a medication to stop this. What low protein dog food is best for my senior dog with kidney issues?

You are correct that it is very hard to find a low protein dog food. Most commercial dog foods are formulated to meet the needs of an average adult dog, so they tend to have a higher amount of protein. You can find some senior diets that have lower protein amounts, but a really low protein diet is generally only available in a prescription diet. Blue Buffalo has had some recalls, but generally tries to do a good job formulating a good food. My top senior diet recommendations are Wellness and Orijen, but Orijen is not low protein. My dog has kidney disease. Can he have milk? What else can I do?

I'm sorry to hear about your dogs diagnosis! Phosphorus is something we try to avoid with renal failure because the kidneys have lost the ability to excrete it properly. Because milk is high in phosphorus I would avoid giving it. A prescription renal diet like you are using is the best food to avoid giving too much phosphorus. If your dog's phosphorus levels are already high you can ask your veterinarian about giving medications like aluminum hydroxide. As far as additional things you can do at home for your dog, subcutaneous fluids may be worthwhile. Your veterinarian can teach you how to administer these fluids. Medications like Azodyl may also be helpful. As an integrative veterinarian I also manage my patients with kidney disease with acupuncture and herbal medicine.
