My dog is jealous and barks at my husband. What can I do?

You need to seek the help of a professional dog trainer or this can turn into a serious issue. She does this because she thinks she is the boss, the alpha, over you. She sees your spouse as a threat. I strongly suggest you get a trainer to come to your home to assess the situation and see her behavior in her own environment. That way they can make the appropriate recommendations. Best wishes.

Since River prefers you, he is likely jealous. The only way to make it stop is to lock him out of the bedroom. It may be that he sees himself higher in rank, above your husband, in the family pack. Make sure that you and your husband always eat before the dog and very strictly do not allow him on your bed or in the bedroom. He needs to have a bed outside of the bedroom, basically establish that he is last in rank in the family. This takes some time. Since dogs are also sensitive to hormones (your dog can smell that you are female, and your husband is male, your dog can even smell when you are ovulating), it may also be a good idea to have him neutered.

If your husband was wearing a hat or clothes that scared Lacey, this could prompt her to develop a fear of him. If she is adopted, maybe she had a previous experience that was recently triggered by something your husband did (loud noise, etc.). I would recommend having your husband walk her regularly, give her lots of treats and make her do tricks for them, etc. Have him spend more time with her and if the behavior does not correct itself, I would maybe have her examined by a veterinarian so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. Start being the person that feeds, walks and interacts with the dog on a regular basis. Carry treats with you and reward him when he stops barking at you, comes to you or does something you've asked him to, such as sit or down. You need to be the person that all good things come from until he is more open to your presence. His past may have been traumatic in some way that he associates with you and you'll have to be patient and kind to win him over. He may still prefer your wife's company, but hopefully you'll be able to convince him you're not so bad.

Hi, if your dog hates men it may be a dominance issues. Buddy may feel like men are trying to be the leader of his pack and he wants to challenge them. Or he may just be afraid of them and showing fear. I would socialize him with many men by walking her on a leash and having the man calmly drop a treat in front of him. The more different men who do this, the better. Praise him when he is not barking. Then have them come closer and get down on his level and hand him a treat. Go slow with this and don't have them reach to pet his unless he approaches them. If you're walking Buddy and he starts to bark, get his attention back to you by carrying some treats with you. Stop and have him sit then reward him. Ask the man going by if he would toss a treat to him. Sometimes strangers or neighbors, friends and family are willing to help with this. Figure out what he gets out of barking and remove it. Don't give your dog the opportunity to continue the barking behavior. But don't ever shout at your dog to stop barking, because they see that as you 'barking' with them and it does little to discourage them. Ignore your dog's barking for as long as it takes him to stop. That means don't give him attention at all while he's barking. Your attention only rewards him for being noisy. Don't talk to, don't touch, or even look at him. When he finally quiets, even to take a breath, reward him with a treat. To be successful with this method, you must wait as long as it takes for him to stop barking. Yelling at him is the equivalent of barking with him. Teach your dog the ‘quiet’ command. Oddly, the first step is to teach your dog to bark on command. Give your dog the command to "speak," wait for him to bark two or three times, and then stick a tasty treat in front of his nose. When he stops barking to sniff the treat, praise him and give him the treat. Repeat until he starts barking as soon as you say "speak." Once your dog can reliably bark on command, teach him the "quiet" command. In a calm environment with no distractions, tell him to "speak." When he starts barking, say "quiet" and stick a treat in front of his nose. Praise him for being quiet and give him the treat. Make sure your dog is getting sufficient physical and mental exercise every day. A tired dog is a good dog and one who is less likely to bark from boredom or frustration. Depending on his breed, age, and health, your dog may require several long walks as well as a good game of chasing the ball and playing with some interactive toys.

Poor Nash! It sounds like he may be a bit fearful, or having some socialization issues. A good first step would be to have your husband carry Nash's favorite treat with him at all times. Any time Nash approaches or shows interest, your husband can then reward him with praise and a treat, helping Nash start to associate your husband with good things, even in slightly scarier places (such as outside). You can also have people approach him and toss a treat to him (without acknowledging or petting him) to help him start to associate people with positives as well. I also highly recommend working with a trainer in person that can assist you with training techniques such as BAT (Behavioral Adjustment Training) to work on the fear and barking around other pets and people.
