My dog has IVDD. How to best care for her and help with eating?

My pup was diagnosed with IVDD 2 days ago. 50% chance of walking again. She hasnt wanted to eat and shes taking meds. She was moving nonstop last night whcih led me to laying her down but she resisted. I dont want to hurt her. Wht poition should she be layed down in. She pulls back her neck as much as possible. Gave her melatonin as well. What to feed? Can i shower her? Should the surface in the crate be flat? Or have her bed? Lost feeling of bith hinde legs. Caprofen 25mg & neurontin 100mg meds

Hello. I am sorry for the IVDD diagnosis. Was a surgical option presented to you? Many dogs go through surgery very well & have outstanding results.
Bella should be placed on restricted activity. This usually means complete cage rest, only being allowed out to relieve herself. There is no need to give melatonin nor change her food. I would avoid bathing unless she is soiling herself ( urinating or defecating )in which case you might want to put a doggie diaper on her. The surface of the crate should be flat & non-slip & should be well padded to prevent sores. If the carprofen & neurotin is not keeping her comfortable, you may be able to increase the dose of neurotin, or she may need a stronger pain reliever like fentanyl. Lack of appetite can be from the pain, so increasing/changing pain meds may help. You can also speak with your vet about using an appetite stimulant like mirtazapine or Entyce to improve her appetite. I hope Bella is feeling better soon. I'm so sorry that you and your Bella are going through this. I recommend speaking to your veterinarian about financing options such as CareCredit that may allow you to have the surgery performed, as the surgery would give her the best chance at walking again. Also contact your local Humane Society/shelters to see if they know of other companies that provide financing options. If surgery is not an option for you, I recommend you look into pain management and crate rest through your veterinarian, and contact a veterinary acupuncturist immediately. In some cases acupuncture and rehabilitation/physiotherapy can help restore at least some function in dogs with IVDD. Poor Bella! Unfortunately IVDD can progress to paralysis. I'm going to give you some resources that may help you afford surgery for her. You can see if your vet accepts payment plans, if there is a low cost clinic in your area, or you can apply for Care Credit online. There is also an organization called Red Rover that give grants for treatment of sick animals, and you can see if you qualify for one of their grants. Dog has IVDD, still in pain after Meloxicam. What are my options?

There are a few more medications that can be given such as tramadol and gabapentin, both are prescription only, you can get them from your normal vet. the most important factor for good recovery is cage rest for at least two weeks, in most cases neither MRI nor surgery are needed.

My Pekingese has IVDD and is paralyzed. What are her recovery options?

Hello. I am sorry that this happened to Gina. The most recent recommendations for IVDD do not include steroid use and do include surgical decompression (a surgery to remove the herniated bit). If surgery is not possible due to finances (usually at least $4000, but talk to vets in your area), then strict cage rest for 6 weeks is recommended. These are the latest recommendations. The best thing to do would be to get a consultation with a neurologist or a surgeon, and have surgery if you can. I would look into these options ASAP as prognosis and return of function decreases the longer the compression is in place, so surgery now isn't as successful as surgery when it first happened, however surgery does have very good outcomes, often getting 80-95% of normal function back. I would recommend a consultation with a surgical specialist or a neurologist if you can. Good luck with Gina!

My dog's IVDD pain is worsening. Should her current meds be changed?

Yes, it is possible that the meds are not strong enough, personally those medications would not be my first choice for IVDD as this is usually a very painful condition and these medications are not strong enough to treat this type of pain. i would recommend contacting you vet in order to switch the Codein with Tramadol and add either Metacam or Rymadil to the treatment as well.

My dog has IVDD, is stiff and in pain. How do I care for him at home?

Poor Chester! Hopefully by tomorrow, you will start to see some improvement. Rest him. Don't move him unless he has to out to potty, and you can bring food and water to him so he doesn't have to move much. Keep a close eye on him, and if you feel you aren't seeing any improvement, bring him back into the vet.

My old dog has inoperable cancer. How can I manage her pain?

Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. I'm sorry that Bella has this cancer, but glad that she is still eating and happy. Depending on the type of cancer, steroid may or may not help, I would discuss with your vet about a steroid vs. an NSAID. The two cannot be given at the same time so you will have to pick one or the other. Gabapentin is good for pain as well, so continue this and ask your vet if you can increase this dose. CBD oil is controversial for sure, but the biggest issue is that the amount of drug in each 'pill'/'capsule' is highly variable, so sometimes there will be no drug and sometimes far too much. If Bella isn't responding well to it, then I would suggest stopping it. Ulcerated skin will be painful, but gauge her quality of life based on if she is eating, walking, wagging her tail, happy otherwise, you know her best. Best of luck with Bella, I hope she feels happy for a long time!
