My dog's IV site is yellow and painful. Is his skin peeling?

Thanks for the question. If Admiral can wear a cone or e-collar, or a t-shirt to keep from licking the area it might have a chance to heal. As long as he keeps licking it, the healing will be slow. If it is not getting better in the next couple of days, he may need to go back in to see the vet for antibiotics. I hope it resolves quickly.

If you see a yellow creamy discharge, this can be pus. A clear yellow or amber colored discharge is likely serum, which oozes out as a wound heals. Itching and biting the skin can be caused by many things, including fleas, mange, lice, infections (bacterial or yeast), ringworm, allergies, among others. To fix the skin, we will first have to identify the cause for the wounds. I recommend that Sirius Black see a vet as soon as possible to identify the cause so he can receive appropriate treatment. Until you take him to the vet, clean the areas with a first-aid chlorhexidine wound soap and warm water. Apply a thin layer of neosporin twice a day. Since Sirius will want to lick it off and keep biting, he should wear an e-collar to prevent further damage to the skin.

It looks like a hot spot (moist dermatitis). Your veterinarian should examine Roxy to confirm the diagnosis. Place an e-collar (cone) on her to prevent pawing or rubbing. The e-collar may keep your other dog away from it as well. Ideally, the area should be clipped and scrubbed by your vet. Topical and/or systemic antibiotic treatment may be indicated.

This sounds like a hotspot which may require antibiotics and also antiinflammatory/pain medication to reduce the scratchinh as prescribed by your vet. Be sure to keep the wound clean and bathe 2-3times daily with dilute chlorhexidine or saline in order to reduce the infection.

Oreo looks like he has developed a skin infection from the excessive licking. Please have him seen by a veterinarian to help treat the infection. You can also get a cone (e-collar) from the pet store to prevent further self trauma until you can get into the vet.

That looks like a pretty nasty hot spot. Hot spots are caused by chronic moisture against the skin (which is common with a collar or something else wrapped around the neck). The best way to treat a hot spot is to clip the hair from the area so that it can fully dry out. You will need to use buzzing clipper, not a razor or scissors. You can try an OTC pet antimicrobial spray, but often prescription sprays or ointments work a little better since they contain a steroid and real antibiotics. You may also have to get creative in finding ways to prevent Peyton from scratching this area, as that will delay healing and can damage the skin. You can try socks, dog booties, or bandaging the feet to cover the nails. Unfortunately, due to the location, he won't be able to use an e-collar. If the hotspot isn't looking better in 48 hours, I would recommend that you have Peyton checked out by a vet.

Hello. The area is definitely irritated & probably infected. Clean the area with a skin antiseptic, one with either chlorhexidine or benzoyl peroxide as the main ingredient. If Wangu is licking the area, pick up an Elizabethan cone or collar to wear so he cannot reach the spot. Do not administer any medications until your vet has had a chance to examine the area. To help with pain & discomfort, take a bag of frozen vegetables like peas, wrap in a tea towel & hold against the area for 10 minutes several times during the day. The cold will numb the area giving him some relief. Once your vet sees this, I am sure he will start antibiotics & possibly advise other treatments.
