My dog's paws are red and itchy. Could it be athlete's foot?

Hello. This is a very typical presentation of a dog with Atopy, an inhalant or contact skin allergy. Your veterinarian can recommend several different manners in which to address this problem, including medicated shampoos or oral/injectable antiallergy treatments. It could also be due to an infection or injury to the paws. He should see a vet for this to get it diagnosed and treated. Tonight, try soaking his paws in an Epsom salt bath to see if that helps. Put a cone on him to keep him from biting the paws and making things worse. If you don't have one, I can put a link below on how to make one at home. It really comes down to figuring out what is causing his allergies so that they can be treated or the specific allergen avoided. A secondary infection is likely and also needs to be addressed. There are many things that can cause allergies though in most cases they can be broken down into 3 big categories: flea, food and environmental allergies. Allergies are usually worked up in a stepwise fashion starting with flea allergies as this is the easiest and cheapest to take care of. If not on a flea preventative, then it would be a good idea to get started on one. If already on one then it would be a good idea to change to something else (there are many new products out in the market). If not improved in 1-3 months then it is time to move on and check for food allergies by switching to a novel diet (new protein and new carbohydrate). If that does not seem to be the issue then you are left out having to check for environmental allergies which require blood and/or skin tests. Allergies can be very frustrating to deal with at first but so rewarding at the end when we are able to treat them effectively!

Hi there and thanks for posting! While using Vagisil on inflamed paw pads is certainly a unconventional treatment, I'm happy to hear his paw had gotten better and not bothering it. If you notice the paw worsens or the redness comes back, I would recommend he sees his veterinarian as he may need to be on antibiotics if an infection is present. Best wishes to you and BoDeen!

These signs are consistent with a condition known as atopy, or allergic dermatitis, which can be due to a food sensitivity. In order to confirm that this is due to a food sensitivity, you should only feed Boomer the novel diet. He shouldn't have any human food or other treats. You can also try an omega-3 supplement to maintain the skin barrier and moisture. There are also anti-itch shampoos available that can help calm the itch and keep Boomer more comfortable.
