My dog has itchy bumps. Is it a spider bite? When should I see a vet?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Miniature Schnauzer | Male | unneutered | 10 years and 3 months old | 27 lbs

I believe my dog may have been bitten by a spider. My husband found a spider in his cage and now our dog has two swollen bumps under his tail, along with some red patches. He is not disoriented, but it seems to itch very bad. I'm wondering if a trip to the vet is necessary and if not, what can I do to help relieve his symptoms

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Chippy! If it wasn't a venomous spider he should be ok. If he's scratching a lot I would be worried he would cause an infection. That would require antibiotics. You can try washing the area with soap and water and make sure it's dry. You can also apply a thin layer of antibacterail ointment. We aren't allowed to give Benadryl dosing so call your vet for how much to give. That may prevent him from causing more damage. Good luck and kisses to Chippy!
